multiple car seat question

We bought combination seats for older DS when it was time to move DS 2 out of the infant seat. It was more cost effective since we will need a booster eventually (although since DS 1 is on the small side, DS 2 will probably meet the requirements for a booster first).

This is what I recommend all the time, you are right, it is more cost effective to buy the newer seat for the older child.

multiple car seat question

I didn't renew my tech certification in March, but I will echo pretty much everything that Chris has said. Having worked with him, I can also tell you that he is a great guy and does this out of a genuine love for car seat safety.

I hate the smart seat. It's one of a handful of seats on the market I despise for various reasons. There is nothing smart about it and carrying that PLUS an infant and walking with a toddler and bags into a daycare setting etc is just insane. That seat is heavy and isn't like an infant seat that can be moved from vehicle to vehicle or house with the child IN the seat.

You don't have to start out with an infant seat, but they are easier to use when baby is small, they do tend to fit itty bitties much better than most convertibles although manufacturers have greatly improved the inserts they provide with theirs over the past two years.

There IS no seat on the market that will take any child from infant to booster that is 100% perfect. Techs I've talked to have always said about these seats "jack of all trades, master of none". For the price of a Smart seat, you can buy a less expensive infant seat, then buy a convertible later on.

Also, I know it's sometimes may sting to hear that you're likely to have installed/use your child's seat incorrectly, stats don't lie. Chris and I worked a seat check and we actually counted the seats we did and how many were wrong. That stat is seared into my mine. 54 seats, 53 had install and/or usage errors. Some of those seats had major, multiple errors. The one seat that was correct was my seat. I often have my own work checked. I am not infallible. I know how easy it is to make a mistake.

Manufacturers are getting better at making the seats easier to install, but there are still so many errors that can be made. No one is implying anyone is stupid or ignorant if they aren't installing the seats properly. Chris really isn't like that at all, and he isn't against learning new things, either. Exactly the opposite.
