BF Question: Best way to wean nighttime feeding?

I am cautiously optimistic that DD2 will be dropping the middle of the night feeding. As of right now, she eats at 11ish, sleeps until about 4, wakes to feed, then goes back down until 7.

I would like to give her a bottle at this time so someone else can take over the feedings (at times). While I never had any issues with DD1 when I dropped a session this time I have had mastitis twice so I have to be extra careful.

When I wake up with her at 4 I am very engorged. I was thinking of pumping 2 oz for a few days, then 1 oz, and then eventually not at all.

Has anyone done this or do you have another suggestion? I know its a long stretch to be the first session to drop but if she starts STTN I really want to be able to sleep with her LOL.

We naturally dropped a night feeding recently and honestly I just let it go for a couple days, and my supply regulated. But I haven't had mastitis so I'm not sure if that would work for you...I woke up engorged for 2 nights, on the first night I pumped a couple hours later and the second night I just hand expressed a bit. By the third night I really wasn't engorged. If DS sleeps a little longer than usual I still occasionally get engorged but I just go to the bathroom to hand express and let my supply regulate to meet the demands DS is putting on it.

I also just hand expressed until I wasn't uncomfortable, not until empty. Only took a few nights to adjust.

I used to pump 2 min each side. Just enough to relieve the engorgement. It took about a week-2 of doing that and then I was able to sleep 7-8 hrs without being in pain. I wake up full but it's not painful.
