pyelectasis?

Anyone have any experience with this in their baby?

It was found on my 20 week sono today

I didn't do the screening tests prior. Today I had the MaterniT 21 done.

Re: pyelectasis?

I am 37 wks pregnant and our child was found to have bilateral pyelectasis at 20 wks. They said that it was a soft marker for downs but my bloodwork for downs was very good so we did not do anymore testing for that. We have been doing follow up sonos since then though bec pyelectasis is also a possible issue with the kidney that will have to be dealt with after the baby is born. Most cases are mild and clear up on their own. Our DC pyelectasis was worse at 28 wks and a bit worse at 30wks. They now consider it mild hydronephrosis. At 30wks it was 1.1 on the right and 1.2 on the left kidney. The right side has gone down to .7 in follow up sonos. I have talked to our pediatrician and a pediatric urologist. In our case it appears that the baby will need a soon a few days after birth and a week or so after to determine if the issue persists. The baby will also be put on preventive antibiotics to prevent urinary tract infections. Its been wait and see for most of the pregnancy. Try not to worry yourself. It often does clear up by the next sono. I have read a bunch about this. Let me know if you have any questions.

Wow. Thank you for your response. This was extremely helpful. I took the materniT 21 test today and now anxious about the results. I also am anxious of what's to one when he is born.
Where do you live? Who is your pediatric urologist?

I live in a bayside but my ob is in the city. We saw a pediatric urologist from Nyu langone center. Her name is Dr. Shapiro. I don't know if we are ultimately staying with her bec our pediatrician is in bayside and he has another pediatric urologist that he works with. Im delivering at Lenox hill and our ped does not have privileges there so we wanted a doctor that would be at Lenox hill when the baby is born.

Re: pyelectasis?

They found the same thing during my Level 2 today. My baby's left kidney is in her pelvic area so this might affect the drainage, but the dr went ahead and ordered the Verify test anyway since he said he is required to offer it when one of the kidneys are enlarged. My NT scan and bloodwork for Downs are very good and there are no other indicators aside from the kidney. Dr. Said that from his experience, if there are no other issues, chromosomal abnormalities or age factor that he's never seen a kidney alone being an indicator for Downs. Of course I also have a stressful week to two wait for the results but I'm not overly concerned. I wouldn't even have the test if it was up to me. I mean what am I going to do at this point???

Good luck and keep us posted of the results Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: pyelectasis?

Ps, idk if you saw this post on Babycenter but I found it very helpful and reassuring, especially this sentence:

"very common issue that resolves on it own usually before birth or soon after and is actually a very weak marker for ds..."

Ok. I see Dr Rosenberg as my high risk. He's the one who did my sono and did the blood test. Dr Trongone is my OB. I just want to know the results of the blood work and also anxious for the next sono to see if this is getting worse or not. How often does he want you getting Sonos

Re: pyelectasis?

I was told after my 20 week scan that my baby girl has a mild case of pyelectasis in both kidneys. My doctor did mention that it's a soft marker for downs but since I already had an amnio that it wasn't something to be concerned about. He said we'll just do another scan at 28 weeks to keep an eye on it and see if there is a change. He was pretty comforting saying that this is very common and something that usually resolves itself.

It's just very frustrating that a test this significant and nerve wrecking would take so long to get back... I mean how long does it take to really analyze these things!!!

But from everything I've read on here and different other forums this is indeed a very weak mark, and my Dr. also assured me that standing solo it should't really be a mark at all. So I'm REALLLLLLYYYY trying to keep positive here, even though it's super hard Chat Icon

Re: pyelectasis?

I'm glad to hear that the results came back good.

I just wanted to follow up with my DD's situation. My DD was born 12/21 and the sono in the hospital showed that she had mild to intermediate grade 1 pyelectasis in her left renal pelvis. It was no longer bilateral. For now, the pediatric urologist put her on antibiotics and we go for a followup sono in a week. I'm hoping that it improves on its own and it doesnt need continued followup.

Congrats on the birth of your DD!!! Hopefully the antibiotics will do what they're suppose to and no further intervention is needed!!

Please keep us posted!
