Baby "play" time
My DS just reached 3 weeks old, so most of our days still revolve around eating and sleeping, but I'm trying to engage him more during the daytime.
Can anyone recommend a book/website or their own experiences about activities to incorporate into "play" time? Is there like a week by week or month by month type of schedule of things that I should be doing with him? (Yup, FTM here aka complete amateur!)

It's too early for structured activites. Just do whatever you feel like doing to interact with him. He can lay on the play mat for a few minutes, do your tummy time, walk around your house and point at things and tell him about them, read a story, sing, etc.

Everything pp said. At that age dd would be in her swing, bouncy seat, play mat with lights and music. Tummy time as much as she would tolerate. Books. Singing. Just going for walks we did outside bc she was born in June. Walk around the house so she can "explore".

Everything mentioned. Plus mirrors. DS LOVES mirrors held close to him. Anything that lights up and/or makes noise. Tummy time with mirrors and toys to get his attention. Just talking, mimicking their sounds and faces to show them you are engaged with them. DS is 7 weeks and still doesn't do much 'playing' although it is more and more each day. The most he can tolerate is about 30 minutes max because he gets over stimulated and needs to chill a bit.

3 weeks is still really young and their eye sight is still not great. Bright colors and pattern, music, swing and tummy time.

When I worked in daycare, I had to have some sort of "curriculum". I used this book which had activities ranging from NB - 12 months. Obviously for NB's it's very simple things like sounds, mirrors, etc. I loved it and have it on my registry!

I had the book Baby's First Year, Week by Week and it did have some suggestions. Very simple things like moving a rattle left to right or up and down as they track it or showing them pictures of people in magazines for a few seconds. DD also loved her playmat by that age. We had the Baby Einstein caterpillar gym and she would stare at the light up star at the top and by a month old she was smiling at it all the time.

I was going to recommend this book. I love it! Narrate his life, and at this age he can see contrast real well, so near a bright window or looking at the light through banister spindles is so entertaining to them!

Just as an example, I got home from work at 4:30, fed DS, then propped him on the boppy, talked to him, sang some nursery rhymes, mimicked his facial expressions and then he started to get fidgety and tired so I put him in the RnP with a mirror at the edge. I rattled it a little and showed him his reflection for a while. After about 25 minutes total of this, he is passed out.

At 3 weeks, everything is stimulating. I used to get crazy thinking I wasn't doing enough. Just have fun with him!

Thank you so much for the feedback! I know he's still so young, but as a FTM, I'm afraid I'm "missing" something and should be doing more with him. I love all of the suggestions and will definitely look into picking up the recommended books as well! Thanks so much!!

With my kids I would just rotate them from baby item to baby item...swing, jumper, bouncy seat, play mat. Read to them, sing to them, talk to them. Sometimes we would also go to the library for a change of scenery.

At that age we sang and told her stories as I moved her arms and legs to keep her stimulated. We got a few smiles that way. Also play mats and mirrors as a pp mentioned.
I couldn't wait for DD to be interested in stimuli. Even now at 3.5 her interests are limited and her attention span is short.
