It's not recommended unless it's canned or cooked. Otherwise, it runs the risk of carrying listeria.

Can we eat...

It's not recommended but I have indulged in lox on more than one occasion as long as I know it's from a reputable place. So far so good!

ETA: It's been a constant craving of mine.

ETAA: I'm also big on everything in moderation. Cold cuts, sushi, etc.

Refrigerated smoked fish should be avoided unless it is heated due to the risk of listeria contamination but canned or shelf stable smoked fish is usually OK.

Can I heat it and then put it in the fridge to cool or does that defeat the purpose? lol

Technically by putting it in the fridge you run the risk of having it recontaminated with listeria. Although the odds are low. What about buying canned whitefish and making the salad yourself?

I agree that buying from a reputable place decreases the risk of food-borne illness BUT there is no guarantee- A good friend of mine ended up hospitalized last winter from bacteria in sushi from one of the most exclusive Japanese restaurants in NYC. He and his boss and two clients all ended up seriously ill- I am from the better safe than sorry school of thought when it comes to smoked and raw fish. In the end you have to do what YOU are comfortable with.

I've eaten lox rather often during this pregnancy. I am def. NOT the norm bc I eat everything. But I always tell the story of how when I was pregnant with my first there was a listeria outbreak with cantaloupe. No one would ever think to avoid fruit or veggies but they can be contaminated frequently. Also my dr. told me that chicken is the most likely food and has the highest percentage rate of food poisoning among any food, but we don't think twice about eating chicken. Everything in moderation.

ITA. My boss was hospitalized a couple of months ago with an illness that resulted from eating bagged lettuce. You can get sick from a lot more than smoked fish.

I agree that you can get sick from a lot more than smoked fish- I think thoroughly washing and cooking all foods is the best way to avoid any food borne illness pregnant or not.
