Any that you do or don't recommend? DD is finally brave enough to climb up on her own so I need something asap.

Re: Gate for bottom of the stairs

we had the gates at the top and bottom of the stairs professionally installed cause I was not comfortable with how the ones off the shelf could fit with the wall and spindles and the bar across the middle on the floor (which would be in the middle of the step and I feared people would trip on it).

I have this Evenflo gate on both the top and bottom of my stairs. We've probably had it up for 2 years. No complaints.

eta: DH also installed a banister installation kit similar to the below before installing the gate:

I think we'd need to install one on the second step since we have a big rounded step at the bottom with the newel starting at the back of that. I think DH is going to flip if he has to screw something in to the newel since he spent two years building this staircase. I just don't really know what our options are though.

This screws in on both sides? Does it swing open

See my edit above. We installed a banister installation kit before installing gate.

Our gate on the bottom is also on the 2nd step since we have a rounded step also and the banister curves out.

It does swing open. It can be set to swing open both ways or one way so as to prevent it from swinging open over the stairs (good for when you're using at the top of a staircase).

The banister we have is a large square and the first post is less then an inch from it so I'm not sure something like that would fit.Chat Icon

The gate screws on one side (where it swings open & closed.)
On the other side you screw 2 metal pieces on the wall that the gate locks into.
I like it!
I got them almost new on ebay.

What about a freestanding gate? This works for us because its open on the bottom of the stairs and we also have a very wide rounded step.

We put the cardinal stairway special at the top of our stairs. We didn't have many options because we needed a wide gate.
