I can not believe how much ds is learning in prek
I am impressed with the things he knows. Days of the week, months of the year, syllables, country, county, pledge of allegiance, his name, comparisons and so much more. I am truly impressed. It is scary how early they learn this stuff.

How old is he?
I go back forth with pre k because I like to have our days free to visit family & have play dates while we still can but she doesn't know most of those things you listed & that would be great to know all that so young.

He turned 4 in July, he goes through the school district. He honestly knew none of this before September. It is so worth it.

ok good, I don't feel so bad, DD is only a little over 2.
All the neighborhood kids her age just started in Sept but I feel it's too young for that kind of structure, for our life anyway.
I want to enjoy her even if she is driving me crazy half the day!

I love prek too... My son got to do it early last year...
He learned to write his name, to cut paper, sung alot of songs, pledge of allegiance at the graduation

I go back forth with pre k because I like to have our days free to visit family & have play dates while we still can but she doesn't know most of those things you listed & that would be great to know all that so young.
My personal opinion is that pre-k is a necessary thing. Meaning going to some kind of school the year before K. MY opinion is simply that K isnt what it was when we were kids. And beyond the academic skills, I think its really important for kids to know how to behave in a classroom setting.
Before that age, if you want to do it, feel they will benefit go for it. If you cant' afford it or just dont like the structuring of your days, thats great too. Do whats best for your family.
DS1 only went 1 year before going to Kindergarten. DS2 will most likely go 2-2.5y of nursery/pre-k before Kindergarten.
To the OP, OMG, they are like little sponges, its simply amazing! DS1 is in first grade and I am STILL amazed every day at the things he is learning! I feel like he is still a baby yet he is explaining math to me and telling me how people thought the earth was flat, etc. AMAZING!

RIGHT?! My DS came home and started telling me about trees going dormant and chlorphyl in the leaves.
Then today he was tasting his dinner and putting the food on the different parts of his tongue. "the front is sweet, the back is bitter"

I agree. But I think a lot of people confuse pre-school and nursery school with Pre K
Pre K is at 4 years old. The year before Kindergarten.
2 year old programs and 3 year old programs are considered 'preschool" not Pre K.
I hear a lot of people say- oh my 2 year old started Pre K today.
Um no, they didn't
Pre K is PRE KINDERGARTEN... meaning a 4 year old program.

For my kids, 2 was too young also. We started DS in a nursery school program when he turned 3. It was 2 days a week, 2.5 hours a day. It was a good stepping stone for pre-k at age 4. He learned to listen to the teacher, sing songs, play with other kids, sit for story time and wait his turn.
My DS is 4 and is in pre-k now He goes 3 days a week for 2.5 hours a day. We just signed him up for a 4th day because he loves it so much and is learning a lot.
There is a big difference 3 yrs old and 4 yrs old IMO.
At 2 yrs old, we did a mommy & me type class at the YMCA. That was fun for the both of us. You can sign up for those mid-year if you want to check it out.

I love everything about our preschool.
I don't think it is necessary to send your child to preschool at age 2 and 3 but I do think that it puts the child at a disadvantage in kindergarten if the child did not attend pre-K at age 4. Here in DC, they have head start for those who cannot afford prek and it is proven that this has helped the disadvantaged immensely.
Of course there are exceptions. I'm sure there are some teachers who can do an equal or better job than some preschools.
My older child started preschool at almost 3 and my younger child started preschool right before age 2. I am truly amazed at how much they learn at preschool. I used to try so hard to sign up DS#1 for this art class, library reading, gym class, music class, etc. He gets all of that and more. plus he has so many friends at preschool. My kids are well adjusted and thriving.

ITA with this. School is VERY different than it was when we were younger - VERY. My DD's class is doing what the OP posted in nursery last year (2's) and now knows it pretty well (3's). In pre-k most of the schools in my area (not DD's) are doing sight words and sight word reading and finish the year reading.
