I think my husband is a total idiot!

Seriously!! I don't trust his judgment at all... he did 2 stupid things in the past week that make me not want to ever leave the baby with him.

First he took the baby (3 months old) for a drive in the middle of the night to calm him down... he LEFT HIM IN THE CAR (locked & not running but still) to go into the gas station & buy a soda. When I told him how stupid that is, he said he was in there for less than a minute so it's fine. No it's not!!! Who cares how long?! Someone could break a window in 2 seconds & take the baby.

Then if that wasn't bad enough, tonight he took the baby in the stroller for a little walk because he was crying... a minute after he left he walked in the front door to get the baby's hat... HE LEFT THE BABY IN HIS STROLLER OUT ON THE SIDEWALK!! And if you saw my house, you'd see that it's a distance... a good 5-10 second walk up the stairs to get to the front door, then he came inside for a few seconds & looked for the hat. I live on a quiet street but so what??!!!Any crazy person could have disappeared with the baby in that time!!!!!

I am soooooo angry. When I told him he said "sorry" but isn't really, he doesn't get why I'm so upset because nothing bad happened. I want to smash his face in I'm so pisssed. Ugh and I have to leave the baby with him a lot (he's a teacher & has way more days off than I do)... I don't trust his judgment! He is very very careless & assumes nothing will ever happen. He thinks I'm overreacting!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Who knows what other dumb things he's done when I haven't been around??!!!

I would be crazy mad too! That is really unsafe and leaving a child in the car is considered child endangerment I'm pretty sure. Your child could be taken by a nut job or someone could call the police and report an infant locked in a car. I know a lot of men tend to not worry or think nothing will ever happen but that isn't an excuse. You have to be very clear with him when you talk to him. Tell him he can never leave the baby alone. Maybe give him a back up he can call if he doesn't know how to handle a situation or needs someone to help him.

Re: I think my husband is a total idiot!

okay my husbands testicles would be lying on the floor smashed beyond recognition.

I wouldn't even leave the baby in the hallway at my apartment and that's because well its just not ok

the car and soda....first of all illegal second stupid...not thinking..i mean you don't wanna get all what if but seriously what if the store was robbed and he couldn't get out...what if he tripped and fell and couldn't get back to the car....so yea iknow far fetched but its a frigging baby!!!!

and remind him illegal.... if I saw a baby in a car like that I would call 911 or if I saw a baby in a stroller unattended I would do the same

and he does not want cps involved...tell him that would happen like that

maybe so he doenst think you are just a lunatic nut....maybe find a safety video about the dos and don't with babies and toddlers and watch it with him? I am sure he loves your dc but he needs a serious wake up call

Re: I think my husband is a total idiot!

I think the same, glad to see I'm not overreacting!!

We were both in Target the other day (toy section) & we witnessed some guy tell his little kid (maybe 4 or 5 at most)-- "Meet me in the food section when you're done looking here"-- then walked away from him. We were both like Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and couldn't stop talking about how crazy he is.... but now my DH goes & does things that I think are just as bad Chat Icon

I always see signs outside of stores like Walmart saying "if you see a child alone in a car, tell someone right away" or something like that. Maybe the next time you guys are out, point those signs out to him. If he doesn't catch on to the fact that it's dangerous, maybe you can at least convince him that he could get in serious trouble and that those signs exist for a reason. Sorry you are going through this, I would be furious too!

Wow! I'd be livid...I always think people have that 'it can't happen to me" mentality...Until something happens. He has to know how unsafe the things he did were...Just keep reminding him of that.

I think my husband is a total idiot!

I am not in any way excusing his actions. I'm just wondering if the way you are reacting is contributing to his cluelessness. Maybe try a calmer approach with lots of logic and fact. I feel like men tend to automatically brush something off when we get emotional or "hysterical" about it. His actions were careless but you will both make many mistakes over the years. It is best for everyone especially your child if you find a way to communicate when the other does something wrong effectively. Good luck!

Agree with this...
Also when we get hysterical or are yelling men tend to shut down. I mean we all do. If i make a mistake i dont want my ass handed to me i want someone to explain it to me. Gently. And it makes me less defensive so i really listen.
I say talk to him gently. Men are even more clueless than us when a baby first comes home. And most of the time they dont ask questions. And not to insult you but im sure being yelled at for mistakes, innocent (though idiotic) mistakes does not make him feel like he can talk to you.

But i totally understand your feelings and would be quite upset and feeling untrustworthy.

I feel your pain because my DH has done some things in the past and even now that make me freak out.
Leaving her sitting up on a counter, letting her "help" him cook near a hot stove!
Sometimes I feel like he has no regard at all for safety, but I feel like most men just don't get it like we do.
Even with the car seat- he never tightens the straps enough, etc/
I just keep explaining things to him, sending him articles about safety, etc.
He has gotten better- but I really feel like we have to "train" them- like dogs. Chat Icon

You need to talk to him. I would be raging mad pissed. But it's probably better if u do it when u are calm after the baby is asleep. Try and just tell him you are concerned that your child is at risk. Try not to make him feel like a piece of crap, but point out why its unsafe that he did what he did. Sending lots of good vibes your way that the conversation goes smoothly.

My dh has had some doozies in child-rearing in the past, so youre not alone. I would calmly let him know why what he did was wrong and why it can't happen again. Ever.
