Gagging, followed by vomiting

DD is 9 months old. On a few occasions, we have tried giving her table food (well cooked carrots, squash, boiled chicken, and beef). Every time, she seems to be enjoying what she's having until the 3rd or 4th piece. She starts gagging and then throws up.

Has anyone dealt with this? Any thoughts? Her ped said she just needs to get used to it, but how can we continue when she vomits every time?

DS is 10 months old and does the same thing. Early Intervention is coming next week for an evaluation.

Gagging, followed by vomiting

Probably just eating too fast. Give her only one piece at a time and make sure she's really done with it before you give her anymore.

My ds is 18 months ans still sometimes keeps stuffing food in his mouth before he's swallowed it, and he gags and pukes.

How does she do on puffs, yogurt melts or Cheerios?

Re: Gagging, followed by vomiting

When I first tried to give DS chicken I had the same problem. I had originally brought him to a feeding therapist so I emailed her and she said it might be too early for chicken for him. She suggested I try easy to chew foods like steamed carrots, applesauce, avocado, etc. and he did well with those. I've heard they have very strong gag reflexes. I would suggest to try different types of easy to chew food and give it some time. DS gave me a run for my money in the beginning but he eventually came around.

We haven't given her Cheerios. She's totally fine with yogurt melts and puffs.

She's vomited after carrots. She eats applesauce, but those aren't chunks. She is fine with chicken puree. We gave her some tiny pieces of chicken today and she was fine. I actually bought her an avocado yesterday, but she has trouble picking up little pieces of it because of the texture, so we end up having to help her.

If she's eating puffs and yogurt melts then she's capable of eating solids. She probably just doesn't like the textures yet. It's common for babies to gag when they try a new texture.

Have you tried something like banana? I'd start it really mushy, almost pureed and gradually give it more chunky until she's just eating pieces of banana. Might help her adjust to the more solid texture.

I think at this age, if they start gagging, they can't stop themselves from actually throwing up (DS throws up if he's ever gagging). Try giving her smaller pieces and with more time to chew, and make sure the food you're giving her is soft enough (I know you said cooked carrots, but make sure it's soft enough).

Sounds like a texture issue, DS had the same problem. If it continues you may want to get her evaluated.

With things like avocado or banana, when DD had a hard time picking them up I would put it on a fork and let her feed herself. She was able to do it surprisingly well at 8 months. Eventually she got the hang of picking them up with her hands.
