Blood Test for Allergies

I suspect DD has a milk intolerance/allergy. She can't drink cow's milk, but she can eat yogurt and cheese. I took her to an allergist, who wrote us a script for a blood test. Do they have to take blood from her arm?? I'm freaking out about this, because I know she's going to lose it. Also, can you recommend a lab (preferably north shore Suffolk) that's good for children? Thanks!

Blood Test for Allergies

I dont know of labs but my peds does it from the arm. He said the resukts are definitive. My dd lost it. And it took a lil bit to calm her down but she calmed down. I held for a lil.bit and i made sure i brought her favorite teddy.

It will be ok. She sits on your lap when they draw it. I actually started cryong too. I was soooo nervous. Not gonna lie it sucked. But just be strong for her and its over before you know it.

DD had it. We tried labcorp and the woman failed to get enough on two different visits! I would definitely recommend the lab at Good Sam, totally worth the drive. Having multiple people to help that are all great with children made it quick and easy. DD cried but just for a minute. As soon as it was over she was fine.

FYI, she had similar issues with reacting to cow's milk but she was fine with yogurt and okay with milk and cheese as long as it's cooked. The test we had only tested boiled milk which she had a tiny reaction to so it didn't really tell anything about her major issue which is uncooked milk. They did test for soy, coconut, and almond to see what her options would be in place of cow's milk.

I agree about Good Sam...DS had nut allergy blood work there at the age of two...from his arm and they were great. I originally went to enzo and they were terrified of taking blood from a child...guess they weren't use to working on children.

Yes, should be out of the arm. It was not fun but it's over quick. Now my DS is a pro at it. as for the lab, our allergist told us a specific one to go to, so I would ask them. Good luck!

We had an excellent experience at the NSLIJ lab in Bayshore, across from Southside Hospital. Good luck!

I had a great experience with Stony Brook's lab up in East Setauket. The nurses were so good with my son and we weed able to get blood drawn easily. The definitely were experienced with working with kids.
