Why does adoption cost so much?

I cannot understand why the system makes it so difficult and so expensive when there are 10000 of children out there who need a loving home and 10000 of parents out there willing to give it to them but cannot afford the initial very expensive cost.

Re: Why does adoption cost so much?

We adopted our son from Korea. Yes, it's expensive!!! But it's not "buying"a child. There are so many things that go into it. Paperwork costs money to process, the social workers that do the home study don't work for free. Chat Icon and in international adoptions, you have to have a staff of adoption workers in the other country. And like in our case, our son was in a Foster home in Korea for almost 2 years... That family needed to get a little bit of money for his care.
And there are lots of ways to make it easier to afford. There are different charities that give grants, you can fundraise.. I know a family that is fundraising to adopt a little girl from china.... Between grants and fundraisers, they've gotten over 14,000!! She planned a silent auction dinner ( got the food donated by local restaurants), did an auction on Facebook... I know people that have made cookbooks or t shirts to sell to raise money.
In case we knew since before we got married that we couldn't get pregnant, so we saved up for the adoption over a few years. So, yeah, it's expensive... But I feel like its a "where there's a will, there's a way" thing. And beyond worth it!!!

A few things to note about adoption expense:

There is a tax credit of up to approx $13,000 available to adopting families. When you factor this in It can make a huge difference.

Check with your employers, many companies offer adoption benefits. When we adopted our DS my employer generously gave us a cash benefit as well as paid time off.

Don't forget about the possibility of adopting through Foster Care or social services.

As pp said where there is a will there is a way.

I don't know much about the process, but I follow a couple of blogs where they are going the foster care/social service route.

Two of them are single moms as well, and both have worked in these systems of care for many years so it's just very interesting to read about......even before they decided to go through with fostering/adopting.
