DH and I LOVE Alexandra but we don't know if we would want any of the abbreviations. We have 2 cousins called "Ali" and I'm not sure I like Alex. Any other suggestions? Do you think it's unrealistic to expect her to always be called Alexandra?

My dd is Charlotte and my husband doesn't like Charlie. When they get older and are in school their friends will come up with the nicknames. When they are little you have more control over that.
My husband is Michael and I never call him mike but his friends do.

I like Lexi as a nickname for Alexandra. If you choose to call your DD by her full name that is your choice until she is old enough to pick her own nick name. The name DH and I choose for our DD has a couple of popular nick names we do not like but we will plan to call her by her full name. What she chooses when she is old enough to do so is something I will have to accept.

Unfortunately you won't be able to pick her nickname- sure when she is little you can call her Alexandra but when she gets older she may prefer Alex, Lexi etc. my cousin catherine decided around age 12 that she wanted to be called Kat - her parents don't love it but have no choice

Re: Girls Name
I know a girl named Alexandra who goes by Ani. It's not the obvious choice but it works. I also know a Lexi and we occasionally call my SIL Lex.

Re: Girls Name
I swore my ds would always be called by his full name. Not a nickname. I now realize that is pretty unrealistic. With ds2 I picked a name and the nickname I preferred and started using it right away. If someone uses another nickname I saw we are calling him Matthew or Matty for short. My older ds usually tells everyone this so I don't come off as a control freak.
My older one is Daniel and his nickname is Dan which I feel is too grown up.

Re: Girls Name
It's hard with nicknames. You definitely have some contra, especially when they are little, but when they go to school, they will get nicknames most likely.
My mom named me Jacqueline and I started calling myself Jackie at a young age, so you never know.
I love the name Alexandra BTW. If you're not a fan of the nicknames, what about Alessandra? love that name too!
