Delivering at a hospital that is not local
Has anyone or will anyone delivery at a hospital that is not close to home? I've been using the same Obgyn/Hospital for over 10 years. I recently moved but have not switched doctors. I'm considering sticking with him but the trouble is I'll end up delivering at NSLIJ which is a good 40 min from home (with no traffic). I realize I can go to a local hospital if it's an emergency, but the goal will be to make it to NSLIJ. Has anyone done this before? I'm convinced DH will be delivering the baby on the car ride there!

I have not done this but my OBGYN is switching hospital affiliations from one that is 3 minutes from my house to one that is at least 30 minutes.
I dont want to swtich DRs so we are just going to cross fingers that things work out okay and we dont have the baby on I-95

Re: Delivering at a hospital that is not local
I delivered at Stony Brook which is about 45 mins from my house (I live in Nassau). I chose that hospital because I wanted to go with the SB midwives. I went to the hospital before I was really in active labor since there was meconium in my water. I can only imagine that 45 min ride in excruciating contractions. Just don't wait until you're really into labor to get on the road. Better to walk around the hospital extra time when you get there than deliver in the car. For most people, labor isn't that quick.

I did this!!!! I delivered at North Shore Manhasset. I live in Huntington which is about 40 minutes to the hospital. I had no issue whatsoever and we were driving to the hospital in rush hour. Granted I was not very comfortable in the car but I would not have been any more comfortable in the hospital either.

Delivering at a hospital that is not local
I did this..not by choice, but I love my dr. and my circumstances surrounding the birth of DD1 made me go to the more equipped hospital further away...I ended up being induced so it kinda didn't matter since I didn't go into labor, but it wasn't the end of the world..I still wouldn't switch because I love him...

What she said!
I did the same thing for the same reasons. After my water broke, we packed up DD1, my hospital bag, and an overnight bag for DH and headed out. Dropped DD1 off with my parents and went to the hospital.
FWIW it was definitely manageable, but I wasn't in active labor during the drive.

Thank you ladies! It's so helpful to hear stories of those who have BTDT. I will definitely have a plan B just in case we need one!

Re: Delivering at a hospital that is not local
I am set to deliver at Southside and I live in Rocky Point. When I had DS I lived in Bay Shore so it was very convenient. I like my OBGYN and I loved Southside so I didn't want to switch. I also have a scheduled csection date so that also came into factor. Hopefully I won't go into labor on my own before then.

Re: Delivering at a hospital that is not local
I had the same concern. I also delivered at LIJ, which is about 30 minutes (maybe a little less) from home (if no traffic). In the end, it wasn't an issue at all because I had to be induced. But also, I don't think labor usually progresses so quickly that you wouldn't be able to get there on time, as long as you don't wait too long after labor starts before heading to the hospital.

Re: Delivering at a hospital that is not local
We live in Queens but I delivered at NYU because my OB is close to my office so it was much easier for me to go to appts during the week.
The vast majority of labors are not so quick that you'll have to worry about this. 40 minutes is not actually that far.
