Classes?
Is or has anyone opted to go to a Lamaze class or child care class for ftm before baby? I'm debating but also not sure where to go. My ob recommended one but it's in new hyde park, by her office. Is like to find one near our house in Holbrook. Did anyone go and find it to be a waste of time and money?

Re: Classes?
I'm taking Bradleys but she is doing private lessons at our house. Make some calls, you might be able to get someone to come to your house as well. I'm also in Holbrook.

Classes?
I took the Lamaze class and the baby care class offered by NSUH. The Lamaze class ultimately didn't end up being useful because I had a c-section but it was good to know what I was in for regardless -- plus we got ot tour the hospital after. The baby care class was definitely helpful being that I hadn't done a single thing to care for a baby since I was 8 years old. Still makes me laugh how dumb DH and I looked in the beginning and how quickly it all becomes habit.

Re: Classes?
i took this class at north shore LIJ and honestly DH and i found it to be a waste and here is why...
-we got the hospital tour and i was glad we did - it helped put me at ease. but hospital tours are offered for free every week or so even if you dont sign up for a class
- the breastfeeding class was informational, but most of what they went over were the benefits of breastfeeding (saving money, weight loss, etc). if you are on the fence about breastfeeding, i would say take the class...but for me, i knew it was something i wanted to try. in terms of helping you learn how to breastfeed...they give you dolls to use. holding a doll to your boob does not compare to actually trying to nurse a real baby. also, the hospital has lactation consultants on staff so after dd was born we had one come to our room a few times...for me, having the one on one with them was more helpful then sitting in a classroom
- they had us watch videos of "the entire birth experience" which showed different scenarios - c-section, natural birth with and without drugs etc. i guess this was informative, but to me i wanted the epidural and i wanted to try to not have a csection. the lamaze part of it i thought sounded good...but in the end, when i was in l&d the nurse was the one helping me with breathing techniques that were different (and i thought better) than what the lamaze teacher taught.
here is the description: PREPARATION FOR CHILD BIRTH CLASS INCLUDES TOUR OF LABOR AND DELIVERY FREE BREASTFEEDING CLASS INCLUDED IN FEE GIVEN AT SEPARATE DATE EXPLORES THE ENTIRE BIRTH EXPERIENCE INCLUDING LAMAZE
anyway, that was just my opinion. i know there are many people that have taken it and found it useful.
eta - i think a baby care class would probably be useful.

Classes?
Lamaze sounds like a bust:/ I've heard what you are telling me from a few people. As far as breast feeding, I know it's something I absolutely want to do so I wouldn't need to go for the decision making. I guess we will opt for childcare and the CPR classes thanks gals!

Re: Classes?
The only class we took for ds #1 was a breastfeeding class, which I found REALLY helpful. I didn't do lamaze because I heard it was a bust. I also had been around babies my entire life and had already taken a cpr class. That was enough for me/us.

Classes?
I took everything when I was pregnant the first time- childbirth ed, cpr, breastfeeding, infant care. Unfortunately, the parent center where I took all of them has since closed. I found all the classes to be really helpful for first time parents. The childbirth ed was chock full of info, what to expect, just running through how everything would play out, how the birth all happens, pain management options. It was really good and made me feel a lot more at ease about the whole thing. The breastfeeding class I took went over all kinds of helpful positions and tips and advice and resources for support and it was really helpful. I'd recommend taking everything you can.

Re: Classes?
i took the childbirth education class at CFA in Smithtown. We did an all day Sunday class and it included Lamaze. I thought it was very educational and they explained the birthing process, drugs, and all the vocabulary you'll hear in hospital. They also explain how the hospital is set up and give you tips and tricks to deal with labor. I loved the CFA class and Mary is amazing.

Re: Classes?
I am currently looking into the Bradley Method. I am I. Holbrook as well. I have a name of someone I spoke to today who comes to your house for 2-(4hr)sessions Fm me if you want her info. I have not decided yet whether to use her or not. Gonna check a few more people out before I commit. I believe she charges 350. Not sure if that is a good price or not?
