Flu shot
Hi
I am so sorry to bring this question about flu shot again but i am not sure what I should do. My Ds is 21 month old she got her 2 flu shots when she was 8 months old. Everything was fine she got some small colds last winter but i think this is normal. We live in nj and she goes to day care. It is mandatory in nj for children attending day care to receive the flu shot. She still did not receive her MMR shot or the hep a shot. I am kind if debating if i should give her the flue shot or maybe write a religious excemption. I am not against vaccination but with the flu shot there is not even guarantee that she wont get sick during the flu season. Any advise would be appreciated. The first thing you need to realize is that the flu shot won't prevent your child from getting sick all season. It won't prevent colds, upper respiratory infections, ear infections, strep throat, etc.
It will only help to prevent certain strains of flu.
The flu can be very serious in babies and young children, as it can be very serious in the elderly and others with compromised immune systems.
While I personally do not get myself the flu shot, I am vigilant about DD getting it every year. She is in daycare and it's a breeding ground for germs.
Will she still get sick this winter? Of course.
I am just trying to avoid her getting the flu.
ETA- she has never had an adverse reaction to the flu shot. She doesn't even react at all actually

This. DS got his first dose of the flu shot yesterday. I'd much rather him uncomfortable for a day or 2 than being sick with the flu for a week! It's too dangerous for babies and I know babies who wind up in the hospital because of it.

We lead a pretty natural/whole foods based lifestyle and I have never given my kids a flu shot. They have never gotten the flu either (knock on wood). It's not worth it to me since the vaccine goes not have a high efficacy rate, plus it must be taken yearly.

Flu shot
I got the flu shot from my OB and Dh and DS got it from DS' ped last week. DS didn't even feel the shot (to the point where I wondered if he actually got it) and none of us had any adverse reaction.
Considering I'm pregnant and when this LO is born he won't be old enough to get it, I'm doing everything I can to protect him and DS#1. Sure there are no guarantees but we all got it last year and ((knock on wood)) in spite of how bad flu season was, we all made it out unscathed.

This exactly. I give it to DD because the flu can become something much more for babies and young children. If she were kept home I probably wouldn't worry quite as much, but because she goes to daycare I feel it's a necessity. In the long run, you have to do what you're comfortable with. Many children don't get the flu vaccine and get through flu season just fine.

I live in NJ as well and both boys were in daycare. Honestly, I like that it's mandatory bc it means everyone in his class were vaccinated. Sure they got colds and ear infections, but nothing severe like the flu. That was one thing I never saw a note at the door about. Thank goodness! I hate seeing those notes that something bad is going around the school.

The way I see it, living organic or not, you run a risk of catching the flu. I've been getting the flu shot for 10+ years and never had a reaction and have been generally very healthy (a few colds here and there). DD has gotten it 3 years now and also never had a reaction and has never even been on an antibiotic (shes 28 months). I just got a preservative free version bc I'm pregnant. I hate the hospital and wouldn't want my DD to have to spend time there if she caught the flu bc I didn't give her the flu shot. Some argue that the flu shot is just a guess and may not even protect against the flu, but I've never known anyone with a confirmed case of the flu who got a flu shot, so IMO it works!
I view vaccines as body armor for my DDs immune system. I BF until she turned 2, we eat healthy, and practice good hygiene (hand washing, etc), but I want to give her body every protection I can against scary illnesses! I feel my DD has an awesome immune system b/c of our lifestyle AND the fact that I chose to give her all vaccines on time. To me, it's extra piece of mind for when we are at the library or playground next to a child who is coughing out a lung or has a dripping nose...

Just out of curiousity, what makes you question their safety? I've never heard of any negative effects of the flu shot specifically. Other shots, I understand questioning, but the flu vaccine is given to SOOOO many people EVERY year...if it were dangerous, I think we would be hearing about the dangers by now.

They have preservative free shots...
my son is about to get his today, I also got mine today. The shot is better then nothing. Too many complications can occur from getting the flu..

Oh, ok. I thought you were worried about reactions/side effects. I know they make a mercury/preservative free version (that's what I just got bc I'm pregnant). Maybe talk to your pediatrician and see if they can order the preservative free version for you?

exactly what is stated above! my DD got the first dose of the flu shot earlier this month and goes in for her second dose in November. She had no adverse reactions at all. I'd rather her cry for 2.5 seconds for the shot than to land up in the hospital for a week. Just because you are "going green" and trying to live a more organic lifestyle doesn't mean you can't get the flu shot, there shouldn't be any guilt over it.
