Insurance Question

We are switching to my insurance in January - we currently use DHs. My DH wants me to check to see if pregnancy is considered a "pre-existing condition." I plan on calling my HR department, but I really did not want to tell my job yet about my pregnancy. Does anyone know if pregnancy is a pre-existing condition?

Thanks.

Insurance Question

Never mind - I just read on the DOL website that:

Are there illnesses or injuries that cannot be subject to a preexisting condition exclusion?

Yes, as follows:
Pregnancy, even if the woman had no prior coverage before enrolling in her current employer's plan.

Re: Insurance Question

Pregnancy is not a preexisting condition but you still have to be careful. Many OBs don't charge you per visit for a pregnancy, but just once at the end. If you change insurances midway, you could get charged basically midway and then at the end so the dr ensures she gets fully paid for everything. We switched insurance a month after DS was born, but I stayed on my old insurance through the end of my pregnancy (so I had dual coverage) so that I didn't have any issues.

Insurance Question

Thanks! Our current plan has a HIGH deductible/co-insurance that would cause us to pay over $6K out of pocket. The only reason we are on it now is because it did cover IVF (although we had to pay the high deductible, it was still less than true OOP cost).

Re: Insurance Question

Under the ACA pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition. Also under the ACA you cannot be denied insurance because of a pre-existing condition.
