Talk to your dr. Mine did not want me taking more than 2 tums a day. I was spitting up so much acid I could not eat. At the end of my 2 tri I was loosing weight and fainting from lack of nutrition. She put me on nexium that I take as needed. Sometimes everyday sometimes every 3 days. It does not work miricales as far as taking the pressure away but does take away the burning. Good luck!

Re: heartburn
Tums contains calcium as the antacid. Calcium is the strongest antacid there is; problem is... if you take it too much, you get rebound hyperacidity. Basically, the body responds to it by making MORE acid! Try using some Mylanta. It may help more, by coating the esophagus for you. And an H2 blocker (Pepcid or Zantac) or PPI (Prilosec or Nexium) will do a better job, just ask your OB first; and for maximum effect, an H2 blocker or a PPI needs to be taken every day.

Re: heartburn
I was told by several of the OBs in my practice that its basically impossible to eat too many Tums...like a bottle a day might cause kidney stones, but other than that it was fine.
I had GERD before I got pregnant and my gastro Dr specifically told me I had to stop any medication for it if I got pregnant. (I was on Protonix).
Ironically, being pregnant and cutting out the caffeine, alcohol, and occasional cigarette I indulged in before getting pregnant helped more than the medicine. By the end of my 1st pregnancy, I was eating 3-4 maximum strength Tums probably twice a day. It helped, and I continued to only use Tums while I breastfed...then I got pregnant again and still only need the Tums (mainly at night before bed). I think it's better to take the 4 Tums before laying down than to wake up choking on acid...which is also not good for your esophagus.
