If you have a child with nut allergies and travel by plane..(UPDATE)
How do you handle it? We are supposed to take Jet Blue to Fla. in 2 wks. My granddaughter is severely allergic to tree nuts (peanuts are OK) We do not know if she is allergic if it's airborne. Anyway, I just found out that Jet Blue serves a small packet of peanuts/cashews. I spoke to someone I know who's a flight attendant. She said to notify them at the gate and tell the flight attendants. They'll set up a "buffer zone" meaning one row in front and one row in back of us will NOT be served these nuts and they will be asked not to consume anything with nuts (if they brought their own) They will not ask the entire flight to refrain from eating nuts. We are concerned because we are afraid with people opening packets of cashews the aroma will travel thru the air system of the plane and we don't know if she can react. We don't know what to do! My daughter is going to call Jet Blue to find out if they would be nice enough to not serve that one particular snack on our flights. Anyone travel with a child with tree nut allergies? what do you do? I'm afraid my daughter is going to want to cancel!! Of course I don't want to take a chance and do anything that might risk my granddaughters health/safety.
UPDATE: My daughter called Jet Blue last night. The woman was very nice. She told her that instead of staying in the seats we reserved (in the middle of the plane with people ALL around) she said we can have the first row going down and the last row coming back. So we won't be in the middle of the "crowd". She also said they do serve a nut mix on the flight but we can talk to the gate attendant as well as the crew and ask if possible if they can NOT give out that one particular snack. They offer 5 or 6 others. People can live without nuts for a 2 1/2 hr. flight!! She said they will also ask the people in 4 or 5 rows behind us (and in front of us coming back) not to eat nuts and will not offer their nut mix to those people. She also said they have a new filtration system on the plane so not all the air is recirculated. Just hoping for a safe flight.

I found this on their site - hope it helps! For the record, I fly on Jet Blue often and they don't serve nuts...they have other types of snacks (animal crackers, chips, etc.) but I've never seen them offer nuts onboard.

I'm gonna play devils advocate for a second here:
I've traveled a lot. Long haul flights many times (10+ hours) were nuts were served. On all these flights with hundreds of people I've never seen anyone have a reaction to nuts from the "dust" and there MUST have been a person or two on each of these flights with a nut allergy statistically.
I'm sure the child will be fine. Have a safe trip!

I was on a flight a few weeks back where they announced they're not serving peanuts and asked people to avoid eating them because a child had an allergy to it. So I'm sure you can call ahead just in case!

I've traveled a lot. Long haul flights many times (10+ hours) were nuts were served. On all these flights with hundreds of people I've never seen anyone have a reaction to nuts from the "dust" and there MUST have been a person or two on each of these flights with a nut allergy statistically.
I'm sure the child will be fine. Have a safe trip!
My son (who will be 3 next month) has a very severe peanut allergy so I've done a lot of reading. From several medical sources I've read, a reaction to airborne particles would really only take place in a location--like a bar or restaurant--in which there were dozens of nuts in the shell being crushed or broken open. In an enclosed place like an airplane, many people would need to break open their bags of nuts simultaneously--even at that, these nuts are already shelled. Also, even "anaphylactic" folks--like my son--are highly highly unlikely to experience anaphylaxis, (although might experience hives, etc.) without direct ingestion of the allergen.
We are flying with him next month (on JetBlue!) and honestly, it never entered my mind to be concerned and I don't plan on calling ahead now either. That said though, I can imagine that if you're a very worried person, flying with an allergic child must be scary--it seems to me you've covered all the bases. I've read recently that United Airlines is a nut-free carrier for your future flights...
In the end though, I am very surprised that any airline would even serve nuts with all the allergies out there...and especially in our very litigious society!

Every flight I've been on that has been nut free (Southwest), they disclose that when you board, and serve an alternate snack. Reason I said to call is so that they are prepared to serve that alternate snack, and re-stock the plan accordingly in between flights.
I would also make sure you bring wipes and wipe down every single thing around you, and keep the air vents closed that are above your head. Even though they announce no peanuts, you know there are still people out there that just don't give a crap about other people, and will try to break out their kids PBJ because they are hungry and that's all they will eat.

Last year I had a reaction to peanut dust on Delta. I have a severe allergy, and my guess is since it happened pretty much as soon as we were boarding, after I settled and starting reading the seatpocket magazine, that someone was eating nuts and touched/read the same magazine. This reation did NOT happen after snacks were served.

That's REALLY interesting about the amount of "dust" being released at once!
I fly mostly international carriers so my guess is people are a lot less litigious not to mention, peanut allergies are not as common outside the west. Although, I believe Israel has similar issues with sesame allergies. I wonder why this is. Food additives, maybe?
