ugh- birthday related vent

so today is DS 2nd birthday. we are having a party for him this saturday at the little gym and friends, grandparents and aunts/uncles are invited. our families don't get along so well. so i figured since everyone was coming to the party that this would be enough celebration for everyone. i had wanted to invite everyone over for cake tonight, but FIL works nights and since he wouldn't be there DH didn't want to do anything. I should have said we'll just have my mom and sister over then and do something with your family another day, but I always think of these things after the fact! Because now ILs invited us over for dinner Sunday, which they do at times, but i'm sure it's to celebrate DS birthday a little more. I told DH I didn't want to go because I honestly do want to relax on sunday, but I also feel bad that I'm not having another celebration with my family. He seemed a little disappointed and I feel bad doing that to him, but not so much to his parents. They watch DS on Monday so they will see him then and we have family events the next 2 weekends with them. So it's not as if they won't see him at all.

I feel bad I'm not doing just a 'family thing' but it just didn't fit in the cards this year. Am I wrong by not going to dinner sunday? Should I just suck it up? Should I have my mom and sister over tonight or maybe tomorrow for cake to celebrate? I tried to have this all figured out before his birthday, but DH is so whatever about things and I just let it go.

Thanks for reading and any advice!Chat Icon

Wow!

My opinion: just have everyone at the my gym place.

After that, see them when you normally would.

I would call your mom and sister and ask them to come over either tonight, Friday, or Saturday to celebrate your son's birthday and then go over to your in laws on Sunday after the party. Having kid parties is stressful. My mom is still angry with me that I had a kids only party for my son at my house without the grandparents. There was just not enough room. She told me no other grandparent loves their grandchild like they like my kids so no one else would understand how hurt I made her. Chat Icon I had a family party separately. We also went out together to celebrate a bunch of birthdays. I feel like you can never win.

I know how you feel. I think one party for everyone is enough. BUT, DH told me yesterday that we HAVE to do something with his immediate family on DD's actual birthday, which is a weekday, in addition to her weekend party. Which means I should also invite my family. But we are only doing a small thing on the weekend anyway. So, almost the same people will be there.

We weren't going to do anything for my girls first birthday with family bc my mom was working. But then she took off so we did last minute. I'm glad we did because it was their first. We are doing their big party this sun. I'd just do cake with you guys on his bday then the party. Then rest sun. Those kiddie parties are tiring!!
