Kids ID and flying
Do you need their birth certificate or a copy of for kids to be able to check in and board a plane?

Kids ID and flying
No, unless you are flying with a lap infant and they look close to 2. We flew with dd as a lap infant when she was 13 months and they asked for her birth certificate. I didn't have it because I didn't think she looked close to 2 years, but the guy said she does look 2. All ended up okay - but next time I'm bringing a copy, just to be safe.

If you are flying southwest with a lap infant under two. They will absolutely not let you board without a copy of the birth certificate. If the child is over two and has their own seat, you don't need anything.

I have traveled on 3 different airlines with DS on multiple trips. I have always been asked. He was a lap child so not sure it that made the difference but I always bring a copy of the birth certificates.....I don't go travel without ID so I follow the same rules for him.

I travel with my children all the time and have never been asked for ID. Like others have said, if they are under 2 and flying free, yes.

This but, the TSA is cracking down and is supposed to be asking for birth certificates or medical records for all lap infants. My friend had a 3 leg trip and they gave her a hard time on the second leg.
Other children don't need to show ID until they are 18.

Yes, you need your birth certificate or passport. However, we don't always get asked to see id for the kids. For international flights, we just handed the kids' passports along with ours for check in. I don't think they asked for anything in our recent trip to Orlando.
I would not risk it and make sure you take the birth certificate and/or passport.

I flew three weeks ago with DD on Southwest.
DD is 2.5 years old and had her own seat.
Southwest did NOT need her birth certificate, but they did glance at it when we checked our bags.
However, TSA wanted it. They reviewed it at the security line with my ID when we went through.
We used a copy of her birth certificate.

Under 18 traveling in the US do not need ID. You don't need ID unless they are a lap child.
I always brought a copy of my girls BC but was told under 18 and has their own seat does not need it.

I don't think you need it for flying domestically, but I always bring their passports no matter if we travel domestically or internationally.

It only takes a few seconds to photocopy it, and it takes up no space or weight in your luggage, so for the effort involved in bringing it, and the potential effort involved in NOT bringing it, I would always bring a copy of their Birth Certificate with me.

You absolutely don't need it as per the TSA website when you fly within the US. Regardless of what anyone else tells you. Unless your child is flying free, then the airline wants to see it to make sure you aren't a cheater ;)

I think it depends in the airline, southwest asked us every time we flew with her, even when she was only 10 wks and obviously not over 2, but we just flew us airways and they even say on their website it's not required but recommended if your kid is between 1-2 yrs old. We were going to bring it just to be safe, but then we forgot it. Luckily, we weren't asked, but DD doesn't look even remotely close to 1 or 2 yrs old

Exactly this! It takes no time and effort to carry a copy just in case!!

Yes that is correct. I had said that above but people were saying all kids need them and it is only lap kid to prove age.
