If you've had or been to a Bris
Did they use anything to numb the baby before the procedure? We don't do a Bris, but I'm getting a lot of anxiety over the whole circumcision. My doc said the procedure only takes about 60 seconds, but the idea of my son screaming in pain, even for that short an amount of time is killing me. I want the doctor to use lidocaine before doing it.

I have girls, but I'm pretty sure they use something. And they give the baby wine. Just went to one on Friday and the baby was loving the wine! He really did only cry for a minute, but it was still heartbreaking.

At the bris I have been to, I know they give baby watered-down wine and i believe he also uses numbing cream.
DS was circumcised in the hospital. I did not watch it, but i know they use something to numb the area. He was away from us for maybe 20 minutes and when they brought him back, he was fine and not crying.

Yes. I put a cream on before a few times to numb the area. My ds also had wine during the bris. Didn't cry a peep. I think we also gave Tylenol before too.

Re: If you've had or been to a Bris
With a bris it depends on the mohel, some do some dont although they all use the wine. But in a hospital I would think they always use an anesthetic

Re: If you've had or been to a Bris
We had a bris and our mohel gave the baby wine (sucked it from a gauze dipped in Manishevitz! ). He cried, but not for very long and it was over quick. Within 5 mins he was sleeping in my arms like nothing ever happened.

They use a numbing cream if you do it in the hospital. Coming from someone who waited til they were out of the hospital......either do it in the hospital or bris. My DS had to be put under. It was worse. I hate that I waited

Cream in the hospital...Injectable subQ lidocaine would probably hurt more then the circumcision itself (it stings alot). I wimped out and decided against it in the end but I'm sure the cream provides at least some type of pain control.

Re: If you've had or been to a Bris
Some people who perform circumcision (usually doctors) use a numbing cream like Emla. Traditional Jewish mohels use sugar wine for the baby to suck on, and sometimes recommend giving tylenol about 30 minutes prior to the procedure. I've seen it done both ways and when done right the baby doesn't actually cry that much from the pain - they end up crying more from having their clothes/diaper removed.
