Speech services?

Does anyone know how to go about having your child being tested for speech? My DD is 17 mos. and doesn't say many words, we figured that getting evaluated couldn't hurt! TIA

Re: Speech services?

We got a referral from the ped and they gave us a contact number for how to go about getting the evaluation.

You can call early intervention yourself, you don't need a referral. There's a very WIDE range of normal for speech, though. How is her receptive language?

Yes at that age receptive language is mainly what they look at. My twins barely said anything at that age too but they understood everything. Their scores weren't low enough to qualify them but the were able to get services anyway based on my daughters low weight at birth. It was an automatic qualification because of that.

Re: Speech services?

you can go through Early intervention with the county or you can go through your insurance.

My son didn't qualify for EI by 7 points. We then went through our insurance and he qualified.

Keep in mind EI is under very strict funding these days and unless it's a severe delay... it's hard to qualify. Chat Icon

Call Nassau/Suffolk DOH Early Intervention and make the referral. It is hard to qualify at 17 months, you will need a greater then 2 SD in 1 area or greater than 1.5 in both receptive and expressive to qualify. If you receive your evaluation now and then your child still isn't speaking at 24 months, you might be able to qualify based on clinical judgement by the SLP. I am a SC in EI so feel free to FM me if you have questions :)

Thank you all for your help! He does understand quite a bit, but at the same time he's our first and only right now so quite a bit in my mind might not be a lot or maybe it is! lol Do any of you know if I have him tested now and he doesn't qualify, am I able to get him tested again if he happened to need it? Or should I just wait a little longer?
