Maybe it is because I never get any alone time but I love hanging out alone in a hotel room. It was heaven to order room service and just watch some old movies, news, tv shows. guess it may sound a bit lame but it is so nice to bum and do nothing.

Even if you can't get into the museums, you can still walk around the Mall area. The walk from the Mall area to Georgetown is also nice. I would enjoy the scenery, do some shopping and check out some restaurants and cafes. Maybe get a mani/pedi or massage?

Google "free tours by foot". I think that's what they're called. They do free walking tours and some of them are in interesting neighborhoods that will have nothing to do with the national monuments. I did a tasting tour once - tons of fun.

I would book soon since they'll probably book up quicker than usual with the current situation.

I am wondering how they will "close" the national monuments, though. Some of them cover an enormous area - I can't imagine how they can rope off, say, the FDR memorial, KWIM? You might still be able to see them even though facilities and tours might not be available.

Let us know how it went. Love DC!

I drive by the monuments daily. Not sure exactly where the chains are but you can definitely get close enough to snap a pic. You can't walk right up to it but close enough.
