Peanut Allergy ?

How do you know if your LO has a peanut allergy? DD turned 2 a couple of weeks ago, so I finally decided to introduce her to peanut butter. I gave her a few Nutter Butter Bites before, and about an hour later, one of her cheeks was kinda red. The thing is, her cheeks sometimes randomly get red for no reason anyway. I also realize it can take a few exposures to show any sort of reaction. Sorry for rambling, but if your LO has an allergy, how did you know? DH thinks I'm nuts!

Re: Peanut Allergy ?

My DS has a peanut allergy. At about 20m, I got the ok from his ped to introduce it. I put a little on a spoon for him to taste... he had no reaction the first time. I did the same thing the next day and his whole face broke out in hives, his eyes swelled and he was super itchy. I gave him Benadryl right away and it cleared up. I took him to the allergist the following week and the peanut allergy was confirmed with the scratch test.

I would just watch her. If red cheeks is normal sometimes, I wouldn't necessarily think it's an allergic reaction. I would try it again tomorrow and the next day and watch her closely with Benadryl on hand. Allergies are so scary!!!

Re: Peanut Allergy ?

We found out about DD's peanut allergy by giving her peanut butter. On the third time she had a reaction... Her whole face turned red all around her mouth and cheeks. I gave her Benadryl ASAP, then brought her to the dr (for a different issue) and mentioned it to her, they sent us to the allergist which did a skin test and blood test and it was confirmed. Good luck, I hope your little one doesn't have an allergy!

My son had a reaction the first time he ate a peanut...probably the equivalent of 1/2 to 1 peanut. He started coughing almost instantly, threw up about 20 minutes later, and actually continued to cough all night long. We didn't even give Benadryl because we really didn't suspect the cause was peanuts (well, I did from Googling later that night). He was blood tested a week or so later because he had already had the script for the battery of allergy testing because of an egg allergy and also eczema. Wouldn't you know he has a class VI peanut allergy?!

Get the Benadryl on hand and good luck!

Re: Peanut Allergy ?

Around the 5th time my DD had peanut butter, I noticed a mystery rash on the back of her neck and sides of her jaw line...my ped didn't think it was from PB but we had her tested anyway and she's not allergic. It was just a coincidence that I noticed a little eczema rash around the same time we gave PB. I treated the rash and continue to give PB w/o problems.

To me it may be a coincidence since you said her cheeks randomly get red...but if you want to be sure, I'd see what your ped or an allergist think.

Thank you for the replies! I tried PB with her again today, and there was no reaction. Hopefully yesterday was just a fluke. Thanks again Chat Icon
