Has anyone ever heard of something like this?? _UPDATE

I'm asking for a friend of mine.

She got her BFP on 9/1. LMP was 8/2. Her and her DH had been trying for over a year. She had a trans-vaginal sono done at 6 weeks and her OB saw nothing, not even a sac. She went back a week later at 7 weeks and still he saw nothing. She has had no spotting at all but she has had some cramping. I told her to make sure he checked her tubes for ectopic bc she said she was feeling the cramping on one side only and she has been nauseous. Supposedly he did and he didn't see anything there either. He told her to come back next week and hopefully they will see something then. He didn't do a blood test. Just an in-office urine test. He told her that maybe she just estimated how far along she is incorrectly. She said it's not possible bc her and her DH only dtd that week she was ovulating.

So now she is about 8 weeks and is anxiously waiting to go on Monday for another sono. I am at a loss as to what could possibly be going on so I told her that I would ask on here to see if anyone else has ever heard of or had a similar experience. I can't believe her OB isn't being more proactive about this bc clearly something is causing her to get BFP's and she is definitely having pregnancy symptoms. She told me today that she noticed it hurts to sneeze so I'm worried that maybe something is wrong. I'm praying that for some reason her OB's machine is just not picking up on her sac and whatnot but I've never heard of this before.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this??

This sounds very similar to something a poster on these boards recently went through. I don't think there was a def answer as to what was going on with her.

You won't necessarily see an ectopic in sono - honestly she needs to see a better ob quick. Good luck to her!!

I feel the same way. But she wants to wait and give her dr one more shot. I urged her to try and see another but I don't want to push too much.
How else is an ectopic diagnosed if its not visible on sono?

At the very least, the OB should have been doing blood work to see where her beta is. I'd try to get in with a different OB ASAP.

If she is 8 weeks pregnant you would be able to see an ectopic on a sono. It would definitely depend on technical factors and location of the ectopic. It is very possible to miss one unfortunately if the tech is not careful. I'm an ultrasound tech, I've seen them as early as 6-7 weeks. I would definitely have her see a different dr ASAP and I absolutely agree she should be having betas to see what the numbers are doing! An ectopic is not something to fool around with or guess about. Complications can include losing an ovary, losing a tube, internal bleeding...

Is it possibly something other than an ectopic? Supposedly her dr check and said her tubes are clear. She's been googling and can't find any other cause for what's going on.

I agree. Why isn't this dr doing bloodwork? At this point, that would help determine a bit what is going on.

bloodwork. betas that rise and drop and then rise again are a telltale sign.

What's strange is that my numbers did that and my RE assumed it was ectopic but it ended up being intrauterine pregnancy... but not viable.

Re: Has anyone ever heard of something like this??

Thought I would leave an update for any of you who were curious or if anyone ever one day finds themselves in a similar situation. I apologize for not updating sooner. I haven't been on the boards much lately. Still having a tough time getting over my losses.

Anyhow,

So at what would be 8 weeks, my friend went back to her OB for yet another sono and still, nothing. No sac and her lining didn't look "right". He mentioned something to her about possible ovarian failure, early menopause, etc........ She called me very upset and said she was waiting for an appointment at a radiology facility for a sonogram with them.

Later that day she text me and told me that they actually found the baby!!! It took that sono tech quite some time and she really had to shove the ultrasound wand up there, but sure enough they found the sac, baby and heard the heartbeat. Chat Icon Apparently, her uterus is very long (due to 2 C-sections close together or something like that) and that is why her OB was not seeing anything. She was measuring 8 weeks, right on schedule and everything looked fine. She is doing well thus far and it looks like a healthy pregnancy.

Crazy how that worked out. She had already decided in her mind that this pregnancy wasn't viable. But she wanted to know what exactly was going on bc she had positive pregnancy tests and all sorts of preggo symptoms. Then to find out that not only was she "not pregnant" but that she may not ever be having kids again..........only to find out that the whole thing was a big mistake. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. At least hers turned out well though.

Thanks for all of your input ladies.
