What do you do?
What do you do when you HATE the toys that LO's grandparents give them? I mean, I know toys are just toys... but there is 1 brand I really don't like and a certain genre of toys I really don't approve of and of course the grandparents get exactly those... I just get so upset over having to give my LO these toys that I don't like. She is a toddler and doesn't know the difference yet, so this is my only chance to be able to have the control over what she can and can't play with. Soon she'll be asking for things herself and/or realizing that I'm trying to hide/ignore/etc. other toys. I just wish her grandparents were more supportive of letting me parent how I want to and not spoiling her with terrible terrible toys!

ugh! no ideas, but just giving you sympathy!! my ILs give DS these really annoying sesame street books that make noises... one has a button that is big bird "rapping"  we mostly read at night right before bed, and these books get DS all hyped up because he likes pushing the buttons and the sounds. PLUS, they're too big to fit nicely on the sheles I have in his room. BUT ILs live out of state and stay for 3-4 days at a time when they come, so I have to hold on to them.... because they're here for long enough that they'll notice if they're missing!
I'm thinking I might start hiding them, and then trying to remember to pull them back out before they visit. BUT DS is almost three and talks pretty well... so i'm worried he'll tell ILs "mommy put the books away, but then she got them out again!" LOL
maybe sell them and tell them he broke them??

I put them up in the closet out of sight or if possible, I return them for something more appropriate. Both sets of grandparents are good about getting appropriate toys for the kids..........it's my BIL that is always buying weird things that I'm not a fan of.

Honestly, a lot of things my ILs do bother me, but this isn't one of them. As long as the toy is age appropriate, and not going to hurt my DD, I let it go. My philosophy is that she's getting to experience a toy that I'd never buy for her, and it's just another opportunity for her to grow, learn, imagine, etc. Just bc I may not be a fan of a certain toy doesn't mean my DD won't enjoy playing with it, and I can't think of any toddler toys that are "inappropriate" for a toddler to play with.

This...my MIL buys things for DS that I wouldn't waste my money on. He loves them, so that is all that matters. I'm not the one playing with it.
They are toddlers their attention for certain things only holds for so long. When he no longer plays with it I get rid of it.

I tell everyone that my kids are not allowed to have toys that make noise (the toys that talk, sing or make super annoying sounds. Things like musical instruments are ok), and that if they give us such a toy, it will be donated to toys for tots. That way everyone knows the rules and no one can complain when I give their gifts away

Ugh, some parents (and parents-in-law) don't listen!  Make them take the toys home with them, and say that DD needs toys to play with at grandma's!

ha, sounds like my inlaws!! they specifically asked me what I wanted them to get my dc for her 1st bday. I told them... What do they do, they buy a different versions of what I told them to buy because they felt the other version was better!! they are notorious for doing this. every holiday I always have to return, and they never give us gift receipts and to top it off they rip the tags off of everything!! we were stuck with almost 15 outfits for my dc's bday and this toy. I was able to exchange they toy with using my license at the store. I asked her for the gift receipt and she wouldn't give it up because she truly felt her gift was better!! unbelievable!!

I bring them over to my folks and leave them there for DD to play with when we visit (they live just 20 min away, so it's every few weeks). That way, I don't have to bring toys for her when we go over there and I don't have to be annoyed with those toys on a daily basis. Luckily so far, none of these toys have come from my folks or my in-laws.  We'll see what happens for her 1st birthday/Christmas though....
