Convertible carseat and airplane travel
If you've traveled by plane and taken a convertible carseat, did you check it with your luggage or gate check it? If you checked it with your luggage, what did you put it in? My daughter is afraid of checking it with the luggage because she's afraid of the way the luggage is handled , that the carseat might get damaged, so we were thinking of gate checking it, but then that means going thru the airport lugging the carseat, stroller, carryons, etc. and with a a 3 yr. old!. Thanks.

Convertible carseat and airplane travel
Put the car seat on the plane for her to use in flight. I'm assuming since she's 3 that your granddaughter is still using it with the harnesses which allows it to be used on the plane when buckled with the plane seats lap belt. This is what I did when I flew alone with DD to Florida when she was 5.

If the 3 year old is going to sit in a plane seat, she should be in the carseat. It's safer, plus it will be more comfortable and more familiar (for when she wants to nap and if she's feeling anxious).
We got bungee cords and tied the carseat to our stroller, and then wheeled it that way through the airport.

Depending on the seat - you should use it on the plane, The exception would be any bulky seat. That said, a 3yo is too small for just the lap belt.
Just a side note, when we say a car seat we don not mean a booster. Booster seats may never be used on an airplane.

Gate checking is the same as checking it when arriving they just bring it back plane side for you. It all goes in the same luggage hold area.
Honestly I fly a dozen or so times a year and have never seen a car seat used on a plane. I don't ever plan on lugging a seat for my DS. He can sit in a seat with the belt adapter things they sell.

I always checked them with the luggage. I've never seen anyone use a carseat on the plane. There's already seat belts on the plane. And honestly, if god forbid something were to happen, a carseat is not going to make a difference.

This. A car seat isn't going to help in probably 99% of accidents on a plane and they are not required on planes. Go on the airlines website to see. I just flew southwest and the are absolutely not required.
Car seat Chris gives good info but I think he should give correct info if he is going to give it!!!

AJ has flown since 2yrs and up. Never with a carseat. I just rented one when I got to where I was going. She slept better on our laps (with seatbelt on) felt more freedom and was overall just BETTER than being strapped down.
However, turbulence can happen. So I kept her belted at ALL times. The lap belt meant I could color with her, use the pull down table, lift the arm rest and put my arms around her. She knows how to belt herself in and tighten the strap. Then I look it over with "no way you did that right" to be SURE its tight.
No way I'd lug a carseat around an airport, but that's me.

I've flown twice w DD and used her car seat on board both times. I felt safer, she was more comfortable, and then I wasn't worried about it being tossed/damaged in the baggage storage. To me it was worth the Annoyance of carrying it around the airport.

While the advice some here are giving is well meaning - the official position with regard to safety is to use the car seat. Like in an automobile the 5-point harness is best. There is less chance of injury especially spinal.

We used to bring our car seats on the plane, but DS would kick the chair in front of him. Now we gate check it and use the regular lap belt. He is a better flyer now that he's in a regular seat. And yes, the car seat would be safer for severe turbulence, but in an actual crash, I don't know how much of a difference it would make.
