newborn outing question

Hello Ladies,

I am due Dec 1st with DD #1 and i have a question. We go every year to Christmas Eve to my families house upstate. Its about an hour and a half away by car. It just close family and no children under the age of 16. Do you think its safe to bring her or should I be planning on Christmas Eve at home.

Re: newborn outing question

I'd say play it by ear. If you are a week late (common in firstborns), your baby will on,y be 2 weeks which may be young for a gathering with lots of people in small heated quarters in flu/cold season. Remember, the first month, your baby will be hospitalized for a cold. I had DD on 12/18, and needed an emergency c-section. I only barely made it to my family's New Years dinner, a small gathering with just my parents and in-laws, and she was 2 weeks at that point.

I would go.

We had DS at a huge family BBQ when he was 3 weeks old. We put him in a room with the rock and play and a baby monitor (you can get the old school ones at Target). He slept for most of it and when he was awake we fed him around people, but we made sure everyone knew we didn't play "pass the baby" and asked people to only touch his feet after they used the hand sanitizer on the table. We wanted him to get out and be around people. We also wanted him to get used to lots of noise (2 Italian families).

Re: newborn outing question

As long as I felt comfortable and the pediatrician didn't have any concerns, I would go.

Re: newborn outing question

I would definitely go! My DD was two-weeks-old at Thanksgiving last year and I brought her to our usual big family gathering (also an hour away).

If you're worried about it, just keep her close to you and tell family you're not ready for her to mingle yet.
