I have heard that the Holocaust Museum is phenomenal. Also the Newseum looked interesitng but we did not make it to either. When we were there we did all the touristy sites - Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument (before the earthquake), Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Re: Must Sees and Dos in DC
I would do the national monuments, WWII Memorial and the Mall area. It's hard to think what I would do without the kids. I had visited most of the museums when I was a kid and did not go to the museums again until I was a parent.
Holocaust Museum is touching. That is one museum I did visit in my 20's and did not go there as a child.
There is also a duck tour.

The archives has the declaration of independence and US constitution if you're interested in seeing those...

Holocaust Museum is truly amazing.
The Newseum is great also but if I had one day I would focus on the mall area.
I thin the American History Museum is the best of the Smithsonians. I would wander around the mall, check out the monuments and go to American History & Holocaust Museum if I had one day.

I personally do not plan on taking my kids there anytime soon. There is an exhibit of a pile of shoes. I just would not know how to explain that.

I agree. I would not take my child there until she was old enough to understand.
That museum ripped me apart and I went through it with a family friend who's parents were holocaust survivors.

This is my suggestion as well. Maybe do the Holocaust Museum first and then wander around so you can clear you head looking at the monuments.

Thank you, ladies! It should probably be just Jewish Museum for now... until they are much older. My kids do know about persecution of Jews, considering their parents came from Eastern Europe as religiously persecuted refugees, but of course this would be a whole other level of information!
