Re: Diapers
DD was 7lbs 1oz when born. I think she was only in NB size for 2-3 weeks before we switched to size 1. I think, depending on the size of LO, you will probably get the most use out of size 1, so I'd stock up on them the most. (We used Papmers Swaddlers at that age.)
Is your plan to not have to be hassled by buying diapers, or to not have to spend the $$ while you're not working? If its a $ issue, maybe stock up on some gift cards for wherever you plan to buy diapers, that way you don't have to play the size guessing game.

DS was 7lbs when he was born. He was in NB size for 2-3 weeks and then we went through 2 cases of size 1 before switching to size 2. I'm not sure how old he was at that point but he was over 12lbs at 2 months so I'm thinking it was around then.

I agree about gift cards. You don't only need to worry about size but brand too. When dd was born she leaked through the Huggies so we used pampers...I don't recall when (maybe around month 4) it became the opposite and now at 6 months the target diapers work well so to save money I use those
In terms of sizes, dd was born 8.5 so we used newborn for two weeks then went to size 1. She wore those for about 3 months then went to size 2 for about 2 months and is now in size 3.

I wouldn't buy them in advance. I would have a box of newborn and a box of size 1's - DD was only in newborn for a few weeks, then size 1 for a few weeks. She moved to size 2 around 2 months. I suggest buying an Amazon Prime membership - it is worth is for the diapers and wipes. And when you run low, you can have them delivered to your house in 2 days.
