Cord Blood Banking
We're having trouble deciding what to do. We did not do it with DS1. So I was just wondering what other people are doing and if you feel like sharing, why you made the decision you did?

Re: Cord Blood Banking
If I can afford it, I'm going to. My youngest DD has a disorder that one day may be curable/treatable. I want to have this baby's cord blood just in case. I spoke to the researchers in the field of her disorder, and they said it is a possiblilty, because her problem is caused by the mutation of a single gene, and there is lots of research going on. I considered it with my first 2, but not whole heartedly because of the cost, but I feel with this baby, I have to find a way.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
I wasn't planning on it, but then when we were in the hospital, the nurse mentioned it & I just felt like I might regret it someday if I didn't do it & he ended up needing it, so we did.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
No I didn't because I don't have anyone in the family that is sick and could use it (thankfully). Also, if my child got sick with something like cancer, he wouldn't be able to use his own cord blood anyway.

This is absolutely not true. Most childhood cancers (90-95%) are NOT hereditary. They are caused by one tiny mutated gene (usually environmental or just completely random) - well after childbirth. Their cord blood would not be affected in anyway and you CAN use their own cord blood.
DS is in remission from Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and thankfully chemotherapy was successful, but the next step would have been to use his OWN stem cells.
A PP mentioned the possible regret. For this reason alone, I am grateful that we banked for all of our children. For the one time price of what I pay for my car insurance every year, it was well worth it for the small peace of mind I had while we spent months in the hospital. I would have beat myself up (even more) if we hadn't.
I know that most children will not get cancer or other diseases that can be helped with cord blood, but I would have NEVER thought that my child would. We have NO history at all. Nothing in my family (besides an uncle who dies of lung cancer b/c of smoking).
I just hope that people are careful posting information that could be life altering for others.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
We banked for DC #2 & #3. Unfortunately DC#1's umbilical cord was too short (emergency c-section), so we were unable to bank her cord blood. (That's what I was told anyway.) And to this day, I feel extremely guilty about despite having no control over it.
We plan on banking DC#4's as well.
[My BIL is an MD up in Boston and highly encouraged the banking.]

I did for ds. Its expensive and if you cant afford it - it is what it is. But I just didn't want to have any regrets god forbid we needed it. I think of it as insurance. You pay for insurance hoping you wont have to use it.

Cord Blood Banking
We did it using cbr. We did cord blood and tissue. If you can afford it it's worth it. You never know down the road and blood cancers scare me. I couldn't live with the what ifs when it comes to my precious daughter.

Yes, my statement was poorly written. You are correct that you can use your own stem cells on non-genetic cancers. However you can get stem cells from your own bone marrow; they are harvested, frozen then thawed and put back into your body.
You can harvest your own cells after you have been diagnosed. It’s not something that needs to be done prior.
It’s great you have banked your son’s cord blood and thankfully you didn’t need them, but if you hadn’t there would have been other options for him.
I just don’t like that cord blood banking companies make it seem that if god forbid your child is diagnosed with some sort of disease you are SOL if you haven’t saved the cord.
In addition I’ve read articles (which I can find again if necessary) stating that some companies have stored cord blood poorly which made it unusable or in some instances have not saved enough. Parents only find out when the need arises.
Lastly I would hope that people would do their own research and ask their own doctors for their opinions and not just make decisions based on a board.

Re: Cord Blood Banking
We have been debating on doing this for the past 8 months. If we had the money it would not be a question in our mind. So to help we asked our regular MD and a pediatrician. They said to put the money towards a college education. My MD said if I asked him a few years ago, he would say definitely do it. But today, there are so many ways to get stem cells. Plus, if you look at the statistics of how many people bank vs the results of “cures”…there are not that many. OB's are pushing it harder because they get their fee. It is a personal opinion and I hope that no one will ever need it. I am donating mine in hope that my child could possibly save someone else’s.
