Jewish Girls - Question
Just got invite to my niece's (married into DH's family) baby shower - it is on Yom Kippur. They are not Jewish. I usually go to temple and break fast with my mom's family. Would you go at all? What do you think of this?
It doesn't feel right to go - logistically I might be able to drive 1.5 to go for 2 hours and be home for break fast - but don't think that makes sense.

It's 1.5 hours away? If so, I wouldn't go.

Re: Jewish Girls - Question
I would absolutely 100% NOT go to a shower on Yom Kippur. And in my family (and this is obviously a personal, family-related thing) I would be speaking to the person related to me who arranged for this shower to be on such a holy, and somber, day.

If you are not comfortable, don't go. It will be too hard not to eat.

You are not supposed to fast if you are pregnant. At least that is what I am told and what I plan on doing. Will be my first non fast in 24 years!

Even without fasting I would not go. It is the holiest day of the Jewish year and it is not a celebratory day - it is a somber and reflective day. I couldn't do it. But my personal disclaimer is that I am somewhat observant so if someone is not at all observant they have to make their own decision about what they feel comfortable with.
But yes, you should not completely fast while pregnant. However - I would not go to a restaurant on Yom Kippur. I will probably eat small snacks during the day that are bland but enough to get me by, and I will drink water.

Re: Jewish Girls - Question
I would def not go, I dont work, shop, spend money, etc on Yom Kippur so I would def not be going to a baby shower or any other event that day. And you can fast, but its usually a modified fast, depending on how religious you are and what your dr says. I know pregnant women who have totally fasted but they were very observant.

I would not go to a party of any kind on yom kippur. I would send a gift. Also as a pg woman you are not supposed to fast on yom kippur.

Absolutely, positively I would not go.
On the fasting note: You are not supposed to fast if it would be detrimental to your health. I'm in this position, so I usually do a children's fast, which is from Sundown until lunch the next day. I'll eat a bland lunch and maybe a very small snack between then and breakfast if I feel like I'm gonna pass out.

Jewish law states you must not do anything to put your health in jeopardy. If you take medicine, take it. If you are sick and can't fast, don't. If you are PG you CANT fast. Your not allowed.
And no, I would absolutly not go to the shower. I would send a gift with regrets.
