Last minute Labor Day weekend getaway
for 2 adults. Someplace within a 2-3 hr drive. And of course someplace that may still have availability and won't cost an arm and a leg!

That's great! Do you have anything specific plans for when you are there? One of DH's favorite comedians is playing there, so I am surprising him with tickets. Other than that, we don't have any plans - although I love it there and there's always something to do

We've never been so were going to try to do the top touristy stuff like visit the mansions, cliff walk etc. Can you recommend a good place to eat? Possibly on the more expensive side (DH's company is allowing him to expense a $200 meal as a reward for his hard work  )

That's great - the dinner reward! I used to go to Newport almost every summer with my girlfriends, but haven't been in about 4 years. (this will be my first time going with DH). I don't really know of any great/fancy/expensive restaurants. Last time I was there, we rented bicycles and rode to a place called Castle Hill Inn - its a beautiful location and I heard the food is really good, but I haven't ever eaten there - but would love to try it. Another place I have eaten at was Fluke Wine Bar - I don't remember how $$$ it was (but I think a bit on the more upscale side). It was really good and had beautiful views of the harbor.
ETA: Just looked at the menu for Castle Hill - they have a 3 course pre-fixe for $75 pp and a 5 course pre-fixe for $95 pp, so you might want to look into that.
