Fetus reduction ???

Anybody have experience with this? The nurse said if I go through with this cycle Dh and I have to be ok wirh this possibility.

On 6 cycles I've never gotten a bfp, so I'm not convinced I magically will get a bfp with 6 babies, but I want to know all possible avenues this path could lead me down. Potentially.

Re: Fetus reduction ???

If you google it, many references would come up.

DH and I agreed that we are not comfortable with selective reduction. Therefore, we are doing IVF and only putting back what we are comfortable ending up with.

I know you don't want to cancel your cycle, but you and DH should have some "what if" conversations before you go through with it, just to make sure you are on the same page.

Good luck though!!!!!!

Are you doing IVF or IUIs? IVF can control for this much more than IUIs.
With IUIs, I would make 4-5 follies- that was 4-5 potential babies. DH and I were perfectly fine with the idea of multiples (although I know my RE would have encouraged fetal reduction if it was triplets or more). We willingly put two embies back in the IVF cycle in hopes to have twins. We were very fortunate to have two healthy babies. There is always a possbility that you could have more than expected, so you have to know the risks (especially the toll it could take on your body if you have health problems). I suggest you research it completely and soul search with your dh before making an informed decision.

Thank you ladies.
This is for an iui, I have already done 3, and was told I should move on to IVF. Insurance said I need to do 3 more before I get coverage. So for this 4th cycle we moved on to injectables. That's why I'm pushing to have this cycle count because the dr wasn't convinced this would work. Yet now on the flip side, if it does it could be multiples.

Dh wants to continue as well. My instinct is to continue, I just wonder if I'm acting on desperation or not. We are good with two, but three makes us iffy. Yet, we've also said that any baby will be a blessing bc I've never ever gotten a bfp.

I'm going to research it tonight. I really appreciate your input.

Just to add, I feel silly for even thinking about this. How is this magically going to work when the last three iui's didn't?

I've officially lost my mind.

I'm crashing and not going through fertility treatmens but I did. I went through with a clomid/iui cycle where I had 5 eggs and went ahead with the cycle using the same the logic you used - I went through several prior attempt with bfn so I went for it but was terribly anxious the whole time. Of course it was a bfn! We moved on to ivf and got pregnant with triplets. Had the reduction talk, decided against, and got lucky and had three healthy babies.

Essentially if u become pregnant with high order multiples, first they wait to see if any embryos "reduce" on their own. If not then they test the embryos to see if all are healthy. If not, they reduce the unhealthy fetuses via an injection through your abdomen at about 10-14 weeks. The fetal tissue is so small at that point it just harmlessly absorbs back in your uterus. If all fetuses are healthy, they reduce based on uterine location.

It was not for us, but I think it is a valid choice. Infertility is a crapshoot and for some couples it is the only way to achieve a healthy pregnancy and take home baby.

Good luck!

No you definitely havent lost your mind. You have to entertain everything that potentially could come your way. Anything is possible!

Do you have 6 mature follies? Sometimes you may have 6 follies but they don't all continue to grow at the same rate.

Wow, I'm so grateful you responded to this. Thank you so much for that insight. And congrats on your triplets!!! I do think I will follow your lead. It's so much to consider, all to be a bfn anyway. I'm getting so worked up , which makes me mad, and gets me worked up more. Lol.

This is a hilarious question bc I never thought this would be me or my experience. Lol. For six months I've had one follie each time. This cycle I have about TWELVE!!! 6 are the fastest, most consistent, dominant ones. They are all growing at the same rate!!! The nurse was hoping some would stop but from a couple of days ago MORE have joined the race !!!!! Lol.

I think that's the right choice. From what you described it sounds very unlikely that you would wind up with more than twins. And if you did, the option is there. Best of luck. I remember these days and feel for anyone going through the process.

Eta- just read that uou have 12! Wow. go with your gut and your doctor's counsel. Good luck!

Thank you !! I'm not worried about the baby follies, they were under 8. The others are 13 are higher. I'm hoping there is still time for them to compete amongst themselves lol.

Because it can!!! My first IUI was a chemical. 2-5 were a bust. Lucky #6 for me and now I am 8 weeks 5 days with twins!!

Dr just called me. I'm triggering tonight and doing the iui Sunday morning. She said I'll probably have four to five that release, and she's not too worried. She mentioned the fetal selection but doesn't think I should be too concerned.

Ahh!!!!!

Thank you all for your incredibly wise words.

I would continue if it was me. I had 5 follicles with IUI and injects and I didn't get even 1 to fertilize- BFN. You can ask your RE about the percentages that twins would occur, triplets, etc. If you have to do IUI again next month your RE will probably lower your dose since you respond too well to injects. You and DH have to decide how many babies you are comfortable with. For us I would be perfectly happy with twins. Triplets I would make myself be okay with but more than that it is a strain and your body and the babies so you would have to decide whats best for your family. Definitely ask your RE for stats. GL

Re: Fetus reduction ???

We did 3 cycles of clomid. Our very 1st cycle I had 6 mature follicles. I joked with my RE we were going to have 12 babies.

He mentioned in my case the chance of high order multiples was somewhere around 1%. We took our chances and ended up with a BFN.

For IVF he's mentioned transferring 2-3 embryos. I'm going to see what the quality is before deciding.

DH and I have discussed selective reduction. It's a personal decision.

Fetus reduction ???

There was one cycle when I did injectables with an iui. I had like 8 mature follicles are something big. The dr caught me off guard and gave me that talk about how my chance for multiples was very high and we may need to reduce. They needed to know I would be okay with that or they would stop the cycle. Well it turned out to not only produce multiples, let alone 1! Ivf finally worked for us...on the 2nd try.

Re: Fetus reduction ???

This is a really personal decision and something you should be discussing with your dh. Even if the odds are SLIM, you need to be comfortable with selective reduction even if there's a remote possibility because you just NEVER know.

When I did my first IVF cycle, we had 2 embryos take but one of them split so we had triplets, but two of them were identical. We were NOT planning to reduce, though unfortunately I had a loss around 8wks and we did not go home with any of them. My point being- the odds of having that identical split, etc is SOOOO rare. The nurse at my RE's office said she saw my type of triplets (2 identicals, 1 single) only a couple times in her entire career)

You really need to be comfortable with any possible outcome and not rely on the risk being small because if you fall into that 2% category or whatever it is, you could have a HUGE ethical problem on your hands.

Good luck!

eta: I've totally been there and I know it's hard to imagine (when you have no babies) that you could run into a scenario of having too many - but it doesn't work until it works and ANY outcome is always possible.

Re: Fetus reduction ???

I was in the same situation. 3 IUI's and then we did an injectable cycle. I got pregnant with twins but probably had about 6-8 follies that matured. I remember the Dr. saying that multiples were a possibility but it didn't register. I didn't think it would happen to me. I am happy I didn't have to make this decision but it really is a personal decision.

After two pregnancies that required fertility treatment to get pregnant. I got pregnant with my 4th child on our own..complete surprise. Another thing I didn't think would happen to me.
