Leg cramps, don't know what else to do
I wake up several times a night with cramps in my legs, but they're not the usual back of the leg calf cramps -- they're in the front of my legs, in my shins. I've done everything to try to cure it...eating MANY bananas, drinking more water, taking calcium, stretching before bedtime. Now my leg (my right more than my left) just hurts! I'm often afraid to go to sleep, because I know it is going to start again. It usually wakes me up 5-10 times a night. Any suggestions of what else could be causing it, or what else I can do? I spoke to my doc today, and he is sending me for a doppler to rule out a DVT, but I know that's not what it is. Any other ideas or suggestions of what to do?

I had the same pains. They weren't happening quite as often as yours are, but I was told it was possibly because I was eating too much calcium. I cut down on the calcium and sure enough the leg cramps stopped.

I don't have preventative suggestions, but when I have the leg cramps I immediately stand up and it goes away the second I stand up.

This is what I do too, and most of the time they go away relatively quickly, but not always. And it is a PITA to keep getting up all night long.

Interesting. Somebody else told me that it is due to low calcium. Maybe I'll stop my calcium for a few days and see what happens. Thanks.

It almost sounds like your describing shin splints (which I have normally). I used to get them in my sleep primarily when I was a kid/teenager.
You said you're stretching. Just make sure you're also stretching and strengthening your shin muscles. (when your sitting write out the alphabet with your feet). Try to do this twice a day and see if it helps.

It does sound like shin splints. Maybe switch to wearing a decent pair of sneakers as much as u can. Also my Sister is a PT and she would do some kinesiotaping on my shins. That helped a lot.

It's a therapeutic/rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. It basically reduces pain and promotes healing of muscles and tendons by externally supporting the muscle & tendon fibers. That's my basic understanding of it.... It's often used in sports medicine. "Kinesio Tape" is a brand of tape often used because its stretchy and I think latex free. I think you apply the tape from origin to insertion of the muscle being targeted.
