What tablet do hava & love (or loathe?)

I'm looking for a tablet for my DS, almost 20 months, who is in early intervention for speech and special ed. He LOVES the ipads that the therapists use and it really keeps his attention, he loves interacting with it, pointing to things, etc. I was skeptical but it honestly helps him learn at an accelerated rate.

Buuuuut iPads are expensive- and he's not even 2- he could chuck it across the room. I've looked in old threads (most 6 months plus and technology changes quick). I've looked onlineat the android tablet, the nexus, kindle fire. And ruled out the leapfrog and tabeo. We are trying to stay under 300. I've trolled around amazon and cnet reviews but those are geared for adults....

Moms, what did you get your kid? What is the best for learning/ learning apps? Should I get an old iPad or can someone recommend something they have bought and had success with?

TIA!!!

I have an iPad, Transformer and Kindle Fire and DS loves the Kindle or my Transformer.
If you are trying to stay under $300, I would go with the Kindle Fire.

Kindle Fire HD.

WE have a rough 2yo who plays with it more than anyone else in our house and he LOVES it. He has some great ABC apps. And if you are an Amazon Prime costumer you can get free movie and book rentals.

plus my 2yo has a bad temper and has thrown that kindle more times than I can count. Including on to concrete. It barely has a scratch on it and it only has a "book" like case. I keep saying I am going to get an otterbox case but so far (we got it at Christmas) I havent needed it! We did get the protection plan....just incase!

ETA: DS was 20 months when we got ours and he was able to "get it" right away. Its super easy to use even for small kids. And He has learned a TON as well from it!
