OB or RE for testing?

I have had a gut feeling that I have luteal phase issues for a while and I am worried it is keeping me from getting/staying pregnant. I think it may be worth going for testing but I don't know if I would go to my OB or if I need to find a RE. I don't think I have any IF related insurance coverage.

I have always had long irregular cycles and it was suspected that I might have PCOS but I was never tested because I got pregnant on my own first (very long) cycle with DS. We have been TTC#2 for a little while now and I have been using OPKs to try to estimate when I O and I feel like my luteal phase is shorter than it should be. I am also still BF which I read can cause short LP.

The first cycle we used OPK (before TTC) I think I had a 12 day LP. The second cycle (BFN) I think I had a 10 day LP. The third cycle (chemical) I started taking 50mg of b6 in the 2ww to hopefully lengthen my LP. The fourth cycle (BFN) i took 100mg of b6 and my LP was 10 days again. I was really hoping the b6 would do something but apparently not... I don't really want to waste time if there is something wrong that could be corrected by taking progesterone or something else. But I am really nervous about the kind of monitoring etc i would need to do and the tests they would run. What should my next steps be?

10 days is a perfectly fine LP. it doesnt sound like your problem is related to LP.
one chemical isnt necessarily cause for concern esp if youve never had any other MC or problems with previous pregnancies. generally if you have long cycles and ovulate late the egg quality is worse. can you get pregnant normally and have a normal pregnancy? sure. but the chances are lower. if you want to be proactive i would see an RE like Dr. B and get a full panel of testing done, an OB wont be of any use for that. however it cant hurt to keep trying on your own since it doesnt seem like you have a major issue and you haven't been TTC all that long. good luck!

Re: OB or RE for testing?

My cycles used to be long (40-55 days) but have regulated a lot over the past 6 months to more like 32-35 days now. (When I got pregnant with my DS it was appx a 54 day cycle).

I read that anything under 12 days is considered a short LP. 10 is ok?

Also is it possible to have progesterone issues without having a short LP?

I do want to be proactive

Your LP from one month to the next will always remain consistent. Even though your cycle length changes, your LP will always be the same - it will not even vary by 1 days.

Also, a 10 day LP is perfectly fine. Anything below 10 days could prevent you from getting pregnant, but it may not.

You don't say exactly how long you've been TTC or your age. But, if you've been trying for over a year or over 6 months and you're 35 years or older, then I'd go to an RE. No sense in wasting your time with an OB.

this is not true. ive had LP anywhere between 10-12 days over the last 12 months. it generally stays consistent but it can vary a little.

Re: OB or RE for testing?

hi, i am in sort of a similar situation. I also have LP issues and so I made an appointment for a consult with my old RE in a few weeks (where I conceived #1). I mentioned to my OB at my annual a few months ago about my short cycles/LP concerns and he mentioned that when i wanted to ttc chances are i would have to go back to my RE (so, not like he was any help!).
