ferry to CT with final destination Cape Cod
Going to the cape in a few weeks. Thought that maybe the ferry would cut out some traffic and shorten the trip with the kids. We are coming from Huntington area and my parents from south shore nassau, so i am thinking we would save some travel time. It seems like the ferry from orient Would get us closer than the port jeff ferry, but both seems more expensive than i remember. Anyone do this? Worth it?

We always take the PJ Ferry to CT (never been to Cape Cod). It's less expensive than the Cross Sound (they charge for children, PJ does not). I like that you can get out, sit on the deck, and not be dealing with NYC traffic.

We do this every year. We take the orient ferry. It puts you up much further along in Connecticut. It doesn't save time at all but it's a nice break from all the driving to the cape. To me, the pj ferry is a waste unless you live by pj. I can drive to Bridgeport in far less time than it takes to drive all the way to pj and then sail.

We just did the Cross Sound Ferry going to and from Cape Cod. It doesn't save much time, but it does break up the trip with kids and you do avoid IMO the worst part of 95. Last year my sister missed the ferry and had to drive, and we didn't. There was terrible traffic on 95 due to construction and it took her 9 hours to get home, where it took us 5 in total! It cost us about $75 each way (2 adults, 1 kid, 1 toddler, Tahoe with Bike rack.) Once you get to New London it is such an easy ride to the Cape, about 2.5 hours.

My brother lives on the cape and we always take the Orient Point Ferry. It definitely breaks up the trip a bit. Be sure to plan your trip so that you aren't hitting the Bourne Bridge at rush hour or when there are a ton of people heading onto the cape...it is so torturous to sit there when you are so close to the end of your trip! We always make sure to get on the bridge by 11am on a weekend day or by 2pm on a Friday afternoon...we usually still sit in some traffic on a Friday, but it is nowhere near as bad as it is later on.

Thanks.... We are going midweek so hopefully traffic Won't be an issue on the bridge.

My in-laws live on the Cape and they always take the Orient ferry because they like to stop at the vineyards. It really doesn't save time but like the other have said, it breaks up the trip. We always drive straight through cause my DD will nap in the car and we stop for lunch on the way.
