How do you get a contractor to come to your house?

We have been in contact with 5 general contractors. One actually came to do an estimate and never gave us a quote and is not responding to our calls. 1 showed up an hour earlier than scheduled(no on was home) and won't come back. 2 never showed up at all to the appointments. 1 cancelled for the third time and we can actually see their office from our front lawn...

Does anyone know if there is a blacklist out there or something? We have a $$$$ job so it's not like its not worth the time...

Any general contractor recommendations????

It's so difficult! It's like they're so busy they don't need the job! We just finished up a reasonably decent sized job and when we were getting estimates we had 3 or 4 that never even bothered to send us a quote. WTF is the point of coming out to us then? There were 2 companies that we really liked but we're too expensive for us. One was ESP in Sayville and I can't remember the other one. I have the info at home if you are interested. What are you having done? Good luck!

We are in South Nassau. We wanted estimates on a second floor dormer + bathroom, basement finishing, and a bunch of other stuff. Maybe it's too much work?

I hear you-when we got the basement remodeled, we called 10 firms-6 came and looked at our plans and only four bothered to get back to us. Two were very high and one was unlicensed! So frustrating! For us at least, Sierra remodeling didn't work as they never got back to us. I am dreading the process as we have to redo our kitchen and bathroom now. Sorry I am not much help!

We just had an appointment with Barry Goggin Construction (A vendor on here). He showed up on time, was completely professional and even sent us a thank you note after our meeting.
This was only last week, so we did not get the proposal yet, but my hubby was very impressed with his professionalism. Not like the jerk who we met with prior.

Good luck!

I second Sierra. They dormered our house and were great.

Re: How do you get a contractor to come to your house?

I will ask DH if he knows someone (he mostly does outdoor stuff like patios and kitchens and rooftop decking), only minor indoor work.

He got involved once with a dormer/whole house reno for a good friend and said it was the absolute worst experience of his life because there were multiple contractors involved.

I would probably say a vendor from here may be your best bet, and I also agree that a lot of them are totally swamped after Sandy......especially if they are small.

I think it's best to go by recommendations from others because they don't want to ruin their reputations and if a recommended contractor is a no-show, be sure to go back to the referring party to let them know.

Our HVAC guy came highly recommended but he turned out to be a big mess professionally and did a cr@p job on the new mini-split we installed. We talked to the friend who recommended him and he profusely apologized saying that he's recommended him to 3-4 people and hadn't heard anything bad about him. Chat Icon Turns out the guy was bad to everyone but the original referring friend had no idea and thought everyone was happy. HVAC guy then cut the price for my BIL's new AC system and started to get back to good service/work.

Our GC was Graziano Construction, we dealt with Mike. He's local to Oakdale but does jobs in Nassau, too. Great job - and he only keeps diligent, skilled, friendly guys on his jobs. I've personally seen him take two guys off our job because they weren't cutting it (showing up late, doing messy work, etc) and I respect Mike for being firm with his workers.

I second Barry Goggin Construction. We remodeled our entire house when we bought it. New kitchen, bathrooms, floors, walls moved, siding, roof, etc. We also had issues with contractors showing up for estimates. Barry came himself, was on time and extremely professional throughout the project. We did end up getting a few estimates and Barry was the only one that stayed within our budget, made suggestions based on our needs and didn't try to get us to do something we really didn't want. We actually had 2 friends going through renovations on their houses at the same time and both had major issues with the contractors they used and the quality of work. Both friends couldn't believe how smoothly our job went (and ours was a bigger job). Good luck!
