Many local newspapers will list open houses in the real estate section.
Most real estate companies do not bother with print advertising these days. Research shows that consumers use the internet, so print advertising isn't very effective. So I wouldn't make papers the go-to source.
You should be able to find information on open houses on the real estate sites, including your local MLS. Listingbook has an open house promotion feature and will send you emails about open houses.
Sometimes (not often) an open house will be cancelled after it's advertised online. So if you are going out of your way, you may want to call the listing office before you go to confirm the open house is still happening at the day/time you think. Also, while there is usually an open house sign out front (or balloons or something), sometimes there isn't, so don't assume there's no open house going on just because you don't see a sign.
But if you are preapproved and serious about buying, I would just find an agent you like who can set up private showings for you. That way, you don't have to worry about finding open houses (not all listings have them, or sometimes they just have one and that's it), and you can see more of the available inventory. Also, then you won't be bothered to have to sign in at each house and fend off the agents who are working there and who will try to get your business! And your agent can do the legwork of scheduling and researching homes for you to see.
