Baby food
It's been my intention to make my own baby food. That said, I know that there are certain vegetables that parents are discouraged from making at home until baby is a certain age. Since I will have to buy baby food if I want to give those specific vegetables to DD, I'm interested in knowing which brands people like. I don't want tons of junk in there (the reason why I want to make my own). Which brands do you buy?

Re: Baby food
We used Gerger organic or Earths Best. Both just had veggie or fruit & water.

I've never heard of anything you can't make for a baby like you're describing. also, even plain old regular Gerber foods have just the ingredient and water. sometimes there is citric acid added but that is in there too preserve the color so the food doesn't brown ( ex. bananas and apples)
that said, I try to give earth's best. they do not use any gmo fruits or vegetables.

I was wondering this as well! Never heard of this before. I made all baby food for both my boys. The only precaution I am aware of is with carrots- you should not use the water used for steaming them because of the nitrates. That's the only I've heard though.

Carrots, beets, spinach, turnips, and collard greens. It is suggested that, if prepared at home, none be given to a child under 6 months.

I've never heard of this before. DS definitely had homemade carrots before 6 months. May I ask why not?

Re: Baby food
The only vegetables you should be careful with are the ones with strong nitrates. Like carrots. When making carrots you can't reuse the steaming water to thin out the puree.
Here's some info that might help Because the intake of naturally occurring nitrates from foods such as green beans, carrots, squash, spinach, and beets can be as high as or higher than that from well water, these foods should be avoided before 3 months of age, although there is no nutritional indication to add complementary foods to the diet of the healthy term infant before 6 months of age" AAP - Nitrate Statement

Re: Baby food
"Preventive strategy would be not to introduce home preparations of these vegetables to infants before 3 months of age, although there is no nutritional indication to add complementary foods to the diet of the healthy term infant before 4 to 6 months of age.23 Infants fed commercially prepared infant foods after 3 months of age generally are not at risk of nitrate poisoning, although the containers should be refrigerated after first use and discarded within 24 hours of opening. Re: Baby food
Avoid nitrates Nitrates are chemicals that can sometimes be found in water (usually water from a well) and soil. Nitrates can cause a blood disease called methemoglobinemia (type of anemia) or "blue baby." Although it’s rare, babies younger than 6 months can get sick if they eat foods that have nitrates.
Nitrates can spoil certain fresh vegetables like green beans, carrots, squash, beets or spinach. (Store-bought baby foods that have these vegetables are already checked for safety.) You can still use these fresh vegetables to make homemade baby food as long as you follow these steps for safety:
Don't feed your baby green beans, carrots, squash, beets or spinach if he is younger than 6 months
