JUst make sure you wash your hands good after you scoop or change, I'd even get latex gloves to wear. You can get toxoplasmosis, it can be dangerous to a fetus.

I would honestly make that one of DH's responsibilities. Of course you can wear gloves and make sure to wash up, but it would just be so much easier for your DH to do it tan to run any risks.

It's ok, just be careful. Gloves and what not if you have to otherwise have DH do it.

I agree.

I haven't changed the litter for over a year now while TTC and I can't take the smell of the wet foodChat Icon so it's all DH.

Re: For those PG with cats

Is the cat an outdoor cat? or has it ever gone outside and caught a mouse or bird?
have your dr test you for it and you can have your cat tested at the vet too for it. If you are negative then yes you can change the litter but you must wear a mask, goggles/glasses, and heavy duty gloves- if you buy those yellow playtex ones buy a size bigger and wear latex underneath- those gloves rip too easily.

If your cat has never gone outside then there is no way it can have that disease unless it has caught field mice in the home.

not every women has a DH and has cats and they are on their own to clean it- speak to your dr. other girls on here have changed/scooped it too cause their DH travels a lot. good luck!

Re: For those PG with cats

It was my responsibility, but now it's DH's. But I have to nag him to do it, so I find myself doing it occassionally. I wash my hands well after. I'm honestly not worried about it because my little guy is not an outdoor cat. Even if he did have it, I think I would have been exposed to it already (it seems if you had it before you got pg, you're generally OK. It's when you get it for the first time while pg) because he's been very sick his whole life and I was cleaning up daily accidents for a long time. What concerns me is the garden--I have TONS of outdoor and stray cats in my yrad all the time pooping and scratching and agrivating the dog. I won't go in the garden anymore.

These were tips on how to avoid it:
Keep your cat healthy and help prevent it from becoming infected with Toxoplasma. Keep your cat indoors and feed it dry or canned cat food rather than allowing it to have access to wild birds and rodents or to food scraps. A cat can become infected by eating infected prey or by eating raw or undercooked meat infected with the parasite. Do not bring a new cat into your house that might have spent time out of doors or might have been fed raw meat. Avoid stray cats and kittens and the area they have adopted as their "home." Your veterinarian can answer any other questions you may have regarding your cat and risk for toxoplasmosis.
Have someone who is healthy and not pregnant change your cat's litter box daily. If this is not possible, wear gloves and clean the litter box every day, because the parasite found in cat feces needs one or more days after being passed to become infectious. Wash your hands well with soap and water afterwards.

Its now DHs job. I can feed the cat but I won't go near the litter box.

I am not pregnant yet but are about to TTC and I have two cats - I asked my vet and my Ob/Gyn - they both said - try to have someone else change it - BUT it was okay for me to change it - just to use gloves, do NOT touch your face until you wash your hands.

My cats have always been 100% indoor cats - but I was told it was still possible - it just increases your chances if they are outdoor cats.

BTW you should know you can also get taxoplasmosis from:

1) eating raw or undercooked meat that's infected

2) eating uncooked, unwashed fruits or vegetables that have been contaminated by manure
