new type of IVF? (NGS IVF)
Just saw on channel 7 news of a new type of IVF, called NGS IVF.
They said that most IVF fails (miscarriage or birth defect) due to the embryo having abnormal chromosomes. (which do not show up in normal testing)
With NGS IVF, they (my understanding of the news segment) implant the sperm to the embryo, then wait a few days, and then test the embryos and only implant the ones without any chromosome problems.
They said that a couple had a kid named Connor with this new technique. Found this article: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/353948
They said that it should be available by the end of the year.
Sounds good to me, hopefully it will be available sooner...

Interesting. I just watched the video. It seems very similar to PGD testing.

Sounds a lot like PGD. It costs extra!

This. It sounds just like PGD, which is not for everyone (we weren't able to do it).

2 questions
1. Why isnt it for everyone? 2. Why weren't you able to do it? (if you dont mind me asking)
thanks

Re: new type of IVF? (NGS IVF)
My understanding from this journal (http://cdn.intechopen.com/pdfs/35170/InTech-Preimplantation_genetic_testing_current_status_and_future_prospects.pdf) and this article (http://fertstertforum.com/treffnr-next-generation-sequencing-based-preimplantation-genetic-diagnosis/) is that NGS (next-generation sequencing) is that the test used for PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis)?
When we spoke to Susan the NP at RSoNY at our IVF consult, she said anyone can have the PGD, you just have to pay for it $2500.00. She only recommends it for patients who have a personal or family history of genetic disorders/abnormailties, or sometimes in patients with multiple losses.
Interesting though, that I did not see any mention on whether or not the parents in the article had a history of genetic issues or multiple losses; or if it was the RE that recommended it bc he said that while an embryo looks normal, the chromosomes might not be.

This is basically PGD. The cost of PGD varies based on what your needs and wants are. I am a carrier of Fragile X so we tested our embryos just for that marker. However...when the embroyology e lab we used made an error they tested the chromosomes of all our embryos looking for abnormalities. There is a difference,... but this news report makes it seem that the testing would occur around 5 day post et which means frozen transfers. When we did it at first we had embryos grow for 3 days but there is much more "data" and cells available at 5 days which we did the second and third time. HTH

You have to be able to get to a 5 day transfer to do PGD. In my case, only 2 of my 5 eggs fertilized with ICSI. Had we attempted PGD, my embryos may not have made it to the 5 day. We had to do a 3 day transfer, thereby rendering us unable to do PGD. Thankfully, the 3 day transfer resulted in my DD.
