cord blood banking?
Is this worth it? I mean if god forbid something happens and this could save my child's life, I would sign up in a heartbeat, but part of me thinks it's just another scheme to charge you money for something you don't REALLY need. I don't know much about it though... What are your thoughts?

Re: cord blood banking?
Everyone is going to have different thoughts about it- talk to your OB, your ped and do some research and see where you come out.
We did it with my ds and we are now doing it with this baby. We felt that it was worth the insurance- it has been said to cure many diseases and several of those are in our family history.
My friend had leukemia and was also given (donated) cord blood and she is now in remission- we can't say for certain that it "cured" her- because it could have been the chemo, radiation or anything really- but we can't say that it didnt have a factor.
We used Maze labortories if you want a recommendation- they have flat pricing- you pay $2k and thats it for the entire 20 years of storage, there isnt a yearly storage fee like with the other companies. I also liked that they are based locally in Westchester.
If you have any questions, please feel free to fm me.

cord blood banking?
I didn't do much research in it but decided but to do it because a friend of mine went to donate her child's and whoever collected it came in and had her do the paperwork etc. while she was still in the hospital they came back and told her they couldn't use it. I don't know the specifics but apparently this can happen. Unfortunately you won't know if its useable until god forbid you need it

Re: cord blood banking?
I was on the fence but DH wanted to do it. He basically said he wouldn't be able to live with himself if god forbid something happened to our LO and using her cord blood was an option to save her. He just wanted to know that we tried everything. So, because we had the means to do so, we decided to bank. With the company we used, the cells will be collected and tested. If for any reason they are diseased, or the sample is not large enough to process, we are notified and we are not charged.

I believe they all do that- because last time with the company that we used, they called us and advised it was a viable sample

Re: cord blood banking?
I will admit I haven't done a ton of research yet on this, but my initial hunch is like yours - that this is the new hot thing to do and may just be more a marketing ploy and unnecessary cost.
I did recently learn that some childhood diseases or cancers cannot be treated with the child's own cord blood because it would be the same cells that caused the disease. In those cases it is better to find a donor match. maybe this is what pp was talking about how the banks will test the cord blood, but I don't know if everything can be tested for.

this is how we felt. We didn't want to regret not doing it versus regretting spending the money.

we went with viacord and they do not charge you until the sample is tested and confirmed that there's enough.
