Please help me get my 14 week old to SLEEP at night!

I am having a HARD time getting my 14 week old to consistently sleep at night. He has outgrown the RNP and I have had him swaddled on his back in the crib now. He has been sleeping from 7 until 2 and then wants a bottle. he was going back to sleep after this, but for the last few nights he has been waking up almost every hour from the moment he goes down at night. He keeps throwing his legs up and tries to get out of swaddle.

Last night I tried putting him on his belly...that didn't work. Then, I tried swaddling him with his arm out....that didn't work. I have to rock him back to sleep...I'm at a loss. Any tips? Can I let him cry it out? His hands seem to always be in his face if I don't swaddle....UGGGGGH!

TIA

IMO many babies don't sleep more than that at that age. My ds was not sleeping through the night consistently until past 6 months. I WFT and there were plenty of nights I had a hour or two of sleep.

They sleep more when they are ready

Personally, I'd try unswaddling the entire night. By that age DS had started to STTN and then stopped. He would work hard to free himself from the swaddle, thereby waking himself up fully and wanting to eat. When I stopped swaddling, he started STTN again. Unswaddling halfway through the night won't have the same effect. Also, if he wants to sleep on his belly, he'll roll onto it when he's able to. For now, just put him on his back.

ETA: Sleeping from 7-2 is 7 hours which is great at that age!

Do you have a music machine? I used that triangle music maker from his play mat and put it in his crib. Everytime I put DS down to sleep, night or nap, I would put it on. I never rocked him to sleep since I wanted him to learn to self soothe. After a while he learned to turn it on himself.Chat Icon

I remember that age and for me STTN was 9-4Chat Icon

Dd is a little bit older. She's for the most part a good sleeper.

What time are you putting him to sleep?
We stopped swadling from almost the minute she came home.
How much are you giving him?

My DS slept thru the night at 6 weeks so we were very spoiled and we still are b/c he goes down at 7 7:30 and I have to actually go into his room and wake him up at 9:30. He has always slept with a noise machine and I actually have the one that projects images onto the ceiling too, he can't sleep without the noise now. We also tried to swaddle him in the beginning and he wasn't having it. I have also heard that if he is wanting a bottle in the middle of the night to give water and sooner or later he will realize water isn't worth waking up for.

First, are you being very quiet and soothing when you feed him. No talking or interaction, just quiet, feed, right back to bed. Is it possible he has reflux? Does he grunt or snort or sound stuffed up? They dont have to throw up with reflux, my son did not always.

Did you think about dream feeding around 1:30? Maybe he'll sleep right through then. Good luck!

Re: Please help me get my 14 week old to SLEEP at night!

Thanks so much everyone for all of your responses. I know that 7-2 is considered a great thing, but he has basically stopped doing that for the last three nights. That's why I attempted belly sleeping and then the half swaddle thing.

I don't think that he has reflux. he uses Gentlease and when I considered switching him to regular enfamil, a lot of you told me to just keep him on gentlease. He usually burps and goes down without a problem.

I'm going to try to NOT swaddle at all tonight (although before I read this, I was throwing in the towel and was going to completely swaddle him again).

I'll let you all know what happens tonight without a swaddle at all.

Do you guys use a pacifier? That seems to soothe him, but I'm nervous about when it falls out....Ahhh...you'd think I'd never done this before! Thanks again!
