Is there a way to find out who a house is mortgaged to?

Bil put in an offer on a short sale a few days ago, for over asking price.

Apparently the owner countered with the same offer, but that 7k of the offer would go directly to the owner "for appliances". Bil put in a higher offer , no money to the seller, and then decided to pull out

Is that legal for the seller to do? Wouldn't the bank have an issue with this? Is there a way to report this to the bank who owns the mortgage?

Thanks so much!

You might be able to find out through public records but that will only tell you who the loan was originally with. The loan might have been sold overtime.

IMO if the seller is puttin offers on his own house he really doesn't want to sell it and will be nothing but problems. I would run the other way.

I'm pretty sure that's totally illegal. Most banks don't even allow sellers to sale to their relatives, friends or business partners. I would stay away from this one. This seller sounds totally shadey.

the seller of the short sale wanted $7K to him

that is illegal

at this point I would assume the people involved do not even know the first thing about short sales and I would RUN not walk away from this house

Re: Is there a way to find out who a house is mortgaged to?

the bank wont speak to you unless you have the sellers permission

and unless the house is in contract the file isn't even assigned to anyone at the bank that can help

so knowing who the money is owed to wont help in any way- sorry

No reputable attorney would even allow this to happen.

I agree. Even when the current tactic is not successful they will try something else. I would ony go forward if you have the time to fight it out and if it is really worth some big headaches.

it doesn't matter

the person who answers the phone at the bank isn't going to be able to acess the sellers account with the out the account number and the sellers SS#
