Why do they add a short movie in the beginning of a kid movie?
Took the boys to watch Monsters University. It was my first time at the movie theater with the boys. We had like 20 minutes of previews and then there was a random short movie on umbrellas. The actual movie didn't start until like 30-40 minutes afterwards. My kids were restless for the movie to start.
What is the short movie for?
I don't think it was an advertisement. My kids did not even enjoy the short film.

I agree it was very silly to have it at the beginning of a kids movie. We started to wonder if we were at the wrong movie.

Pixar always has "shorts" before the movie but usually they are animated and cute, a lot of the time with characters from other pixar movies. I hated the one for monsters university also.

I had the SAME problem with Monsters U. My 4 year old was done with 30 min left of the movie because there were SO many previews.

I knew exactly what you were talking about when I read the title of your post.
DH and I were like WTF? We left halfway through the movie when DS stated he didn't like the dark place and he wanted to go home - if there wasn't all of the crap at the beginning, I think DS could have made it.
Pixar does do short films like that occasionally so I think it was one of them.

I knew you had to be referring to Monsters Inc bc I thought for one the previews were ridiculously long and too many!!! We went to the 11am time and monsters university didn't start until AT LEAST 1140. And what was that umbrella movie????? NOT necessary!!!!

Pixar always has a short before the full-length feature. I haven't seen this one, but usually, they are cute. I've also never gone to see one with a young child. DD is only 1, so we have yet to have that experience.

I was thinking the same thing they should really cut the previews on half for a kids movie, my kids are ready to go after the previews!

Lesson learned. I will be sure to go 30 min late to Pixar movies.
Not sure when we will go to a pixar movie next since DH and I go to like one movie per year.

My 4yo was ok but my 2yo was melting down big time at the end. I agree that if we didn't have so many previews and the random umbrella movie, my 2yo would also have made it through.

Re: Why do they add a short movie in the beginning of a kid movie?
We took my DS to his first movie last year. By the time the actual movie started, he was more interested in looking at the movie theater lights along the bottom of the staircase. He was great at first, but totally lost his attention with all the short commercials and movie clips. We wound up leaving 20 minutes after the movie started, and we were in the theater for well over an hour at that point.
We went to see Alvin & the Chipmunks...a total kids movie. It was mid week in the winter when older kids were in school. We thought we'd be safe and skirt the crowds. There were a lot of parents who brought their kids late into the theater. I suppose trying to avoid the commercials. But by that point, the seating sucked. Only the seats up front were available, and there weren't 4 seats all together for a family to sit together. So much for avoiding the crowds. Even if my kids were older, I still wouldn't want them sitting in a different part of the theater.

I was kickin' myself for showing up early in fear of not having good seats for Monster Univ. I had to leave early with my 3 year old while my DH stayed behind with my 7 & 5 year olds (although they were getting antsy too.)

Re: Why do they add a short movie in the beginning of a kid movie?
Ha I knew which movie too before opening this! I thought it was cute, BUT, we go to a small cinema that doesn't have 10 previews before the actual movie.
We did however go to a movie party the other day at a larger chain cinema, and I couldn't believe the amount of previews, and then the short film. It was annoying at that point!

My DS would never sit through 30 min of previews & a short movie BEFORE the movie started. We'll be going late now whenever we take him to his first movie.

Re: Why do they add a short movie in the beginning of a kid movie?
I was so irritated as well...there is NO REASON that a kids movie starts almost 40 mins later than start time!!!
And if I had arrived late I would have had to sit in the front row which I hate, so we always go early. Luckily the kids were ok with it, but if they were younger I would have been really annoyed!!

DS loved the umbrella movie. I cried of course at it! It was so cute but definitely for an older kid to "get" and like.

Why do they add a short movie in the beginning of a kid movie?
Well the previews for every movie are 20 minutes or so... that shouldn't have been a surprise.
Pixar uses those shorts to test new techniques and ideas, and they help you settle down and prepare for them ovie. They are before EVERY Pixar movie. Not really a big surprise either. Most of them are cute, fun, sad. Haven't seen this one so maybe it does suck lol It would only add maybe 10 mins to the overall time, which isn't a big deal.
