Disappointed in Ocean City MD
We just got back from Ocean City MD today. While we had a nice time, we were disappointed and left saying we probably wouldn't go back.
We were looking for a family friendly beach vacation within driving distance. My biggest complaints was it wasn't as clean as I was hoping-there was a TON of smokers there. Whenever we would try to enjoy an outdoor meal we were surrounded by people smoking-I guess I am used to no smoking in restaurants here in NY and thought it would be the same.
The boardwalk was fun the first night but you quickly realize that everything is the same-all the candy places are owned by the Candy Kitchen, most of the souvenir shops are owned by Sunsations, so if you've seen one, you've seen them all. Did anyone else feel this way?
Any other recommendations for family friendly, clean vacations within driving distance? We are doing Lake George in August, and that is perfect for us. This will be our third time there.
Any other lake vacation recommendations? I also realized that while I love sitting on the beach, none of us really love to swim in the ocean! Can't hold Ocean City responsible for that though!

Re: Disappointed in Ocean City MD
We just got back yesterday from Ocean City, MD. We had an amazing time. We rented a house and throughout my stay, I didn't see not one smoker. It was very family oriented and I would go back in a heart beat. I did go to the broadwalk, and I do agree with you, it's a lot of the same things and also lots of smoker but it's the broardwalk so that really didn't bother me.
We didn't go to the beach since our house rental was closer to the bay. So we lodge at the bay and at the pool. The restaurant within the location was amazing. My kids came back sad because they didn't want to leave.
So sorry you were disappointed on your trip, maybe go back and try a different location???

Re: Disappointed in Ocean City MD
Yeah if we do go back we will definitely do a different hotel-only because the of location. The hotel itself was fine. I am surprised our experiences were so different because I really felt like I was overwhelmed by the amount of smoking-from the boardwalk and beach to the pool at the hotel, all outside restaurants we ate at and even a nature boat tour we took made mention of a spot for people to deposit their cigarette butts! I found it to be really disgusting-especially because it is such a family place. I hated that my son was surrounded by that everywhere we went.
Can I ask, were you able to swim in the bay area? Someone on here mentioned that it isnt good for swimming, which is why we chose to stay on the ocean side, but the water was just too much for my son. He isn't swimming on his own yet and he was scared of the waves. thanks for your reply!

Ocean City, NJ, is extremely family-friendly. I don't even think you can smoke on the boardwalk! Cape May, NJ, is great too. Some hotels have both indoor and outdoor pools.

I've never been but I heard good things about Rehoboth Beach, DE. I am a big fan of Myrtle Beach, SC but that is more like an 11-12 hour drive.

Disappointed in Ocean City MD
I wasn't a fan either when I went years ago.
Rehoboth Beach in DE is really nice.
My favorite place to go nearby though for a beach vacation is Long Beach Island, NJ (but, DS isn't a big sand kid so we haven't been in a couple of years).

QUOTE]
I go down there every year and stay on the northern border of OC (Fenwick Island, DE) and don't go near the OC boardwalk and head north to do everything like eat, play etc. OC is way too commercialized for my liking. Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany are all nice. Rehoboth boardwalk can attract from undesirable people too LOL but FAR less than the OC boardwalk!

I hated Ocean City, MD too. I just did not like the vibe in general. Didn't find anything special about the restaurants or the beach.
I love many places in South Carolina. Florida too. would prefer to go there

I was looking into LBI and found a couple of decent places in Beach Haven. The Sea Shell Resort, and the Engelside Inn. The Sea Shell looked to have a more party atmosphere though. Both looked updated though, which is rare for shore motels.

this is one of my family's favorite spots. my family rents a house.
As I get older I do not like it as much. I discovered Wildwood last year and love it. It is more exciting. It has more to do. I can do the beach, pool and boardwalk.

We stay in Beach Haven. It's great - there are a lot of stores and a small amusement park.
We usually rent a house there but have had friends who stayed at the Sea Shell and liked it - but as pp said its a party atmosphere - their bar is very popular for happy hour.
