Is it true that circumcisions aren't covered by insurance anymore?

Someone who works in a hospital told me that as of the last few years, this procedure is no longer covered & you have to pay out of pocket because it's not considered a medical necessity.

I just assumed it would be covered!!

Is there any truth to this? I guess I'll have to call my insurance company but wondering if this is common knowledge I wasn't aware of.

My ds was born in late 2011 and his circumcision was not covered. We were surprised since our insurance is really good and usually covers everything!

My DS' was covered in December 2010.
Check with your insurance company. I'm sure each company views it differently.

I don't remember being charged anything for DS' that was June 2010. I remember being charged for a lot of stuff related to me in the end.

I heard this too and we got a bill from my obgyn who performed the procedure for $500. Believing it wasn't covered, I sent a check but it was never cashed. When I inquired about it, I was told I didn't owe anything so I guess they covered it after all? Chat Icon

I never heard of that??. Unless the doctor that performs it is not in network, but it should be covered.

For both of my boys (3 1/2 and 15 mos), circumcisions were covered. OUr Dr submitted them as out of network though.

Re: Is it true that circumcisions aren't covered by insurance anymore?

I asked my mom, she is an office manager at my OB/GYN. As long as you put the baby on your policy after the baby is born it will be covered. If not doctors charge around 300- 500 for it.
