Never been and didnt want to hijack other thread

Can you go for just a day? Or is it better to stay? Are the rates expensive for a decent hotel? How long is the ferry and parking costs?

Do you have to rent a bike or can you get away without one?

Lots of questions lol. Anything you can tell me would be great.

BI gets A LOT of day trippers and weekenders from CT (New London Ferry), RI (Point Judith or Newport Ferries) and LI (Montauk Ferry). Some bring their bikes with them, some rent bikes/mopeds and some just walk around. It's a small island...just under 10 square miles so biking is very common. Speed limits are low (15-20 mph I believe), almost everyone obeys those limits and the New Shoreham PD takes that stuff very seriously.

The only way to bring a vehicle on BI is by the BI Ferry which only goes out of Point Judith, RI...and you need a reservation (which can be difficult to get sometimes, especially during the actual high season.)

There are "hotels" but I'm using that term loosely because from my point of view, they're just large B&Bs. Chat Icon BI doesn't have any chain hotels. Unfortunately I don't know what they charge because we always rent a house, but I have no doubts the rooms book quickly. In regards to them not having AC, it's RARE to find a home or hotel room with AC. (Energy is very costly on BI because the island is basically run on a giant generator.) The day can get hot, but the island cools down considerably at night and often has beautiful cross breezes.

In regards to ferry costs, if you take a vehicle, I think it's around $150 (from Point Judith only) and then you have to pay for each passenger. If you're just going as a passenger from Montauk, it's $75/80 round trip and $10 additional if you bring a bike or surfboard. VikingFleet.com has the pricing listed on their site. I'm not sure about parking costs.

It's not uncommon for people to just take the ferry over, hang out in town and walk around, head to the nearby beach and then head home in the evening.

Re: Block island

You can do a day trip - you would usually take the first ferry out (from Montauk if you are an LIer) in the morning and then you would catch the last one leaving Block Island in the evening. I believe it is the Viking Fleet that goes - you can look up their ferry options/schedules online on their website.

We took their ferry from Montauk last year - Labor Day weekend - and we stayed three nights... You can do just one or two nights and feel like you saw a ton of stuff but on weekends and especially holiday weekends a lot of the hotels/B&Bs will require a two or three night minimum stay. It depends on the days you travel and the place itself.

We loved the Rose Farm Inn because it came very highly recommended on Trip Advisor. There's a list of "hotels" on Block Island on Trip Advisor (only five, it's a small Island) and then there's a list of B&B's -- I much prefer the B&B's, they are personal and the prices are good, the breakfasts that are included are divine - it's great.

Here's a link to the top B&B's ---

That first one, Avonlea or whatever, is just gorgeous, wow!! But we loved our little Rose Farm Inn - you can go during the week with most of these places and get a deal on the rates, you can ask about specials, check out their websites. Rose Farm was very close to town and actually had a bike rental place right on the property so we would rent bikes daily and then tool around the island. It is very popular to rent mopeds and scooters too -- depends on how athletic you are lol. Block Island reminds my husband of a little Ireland - it's very similar in color, landscape, etc. It's just the most beautiful place.

Yes, it can get very hot in July and August - it is on the ocean and you get that fabulous ocean breeze but we prefer end of August or early September because you aren't dying at night when you sleep since most places don't have AC -- and that's not just hotels and B&B's -- it's some of the restaurants and some stores too.

The best restaurant on the whole darn Island is Manisses. It is the hands-down place to go, wow is that food good. We liked it so much we ate there two nights in a row LOL. It is about two minutes from town - up on a hill. There's a little lobster roll stand right on the main strip, right on the water basically, and wow it's the best lobster roll I have ever had and I believe it was around $16 which is very reasonable!

HTH :)

Block island

Just an FYI on hotesl/B&Bs etc.

You cannot get a place for one night on the weekends. Most if not all have a Fri/Sat minimum.
